I am about to buy a starter boat, but the boat I have in mind has a defect trim motor. Could someone tell me what's the function of this trim motor and the cost of replacing it? Thanks a lot

  1. The trim motor is the motor that lifts the motor (outboard) or the outdrive (inboard/outboard), up and down. Usually you can find a trim motor pretty cheap on eBay. If you are wondering if you should not buy the boat because of a bad trim motor, it's relatively cheap and easy to fix. Not a major reason not to buy.

  2. The trim motor is what allows you to lower and raise the outboard engine at various angles. It is pretty important unless you are keeping the boat in deep water all the time and not hauling it ever in a trailer, as you need (or should) trim the engine up to haul. How much will it cost? Talk to the closest boat outfitter in your area, but have all the info for them. I can't imagine it is VERY expensive, but then again, in a boat, what isn't expensive.

  3. THERE EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE  BUT MAYBE IT CAN BE FIXED

SOME USE HYDROLIC FLUID LIKE MINE  150 MERC OUT BOARD

SOME ARE ELECTRIC  THERE VERY GOOD TO HAVE  YOU CAN USE IT TO GET THE BOAT ON PLANE  AND WHEN YOU PUT THE BOAT ON THE TRAILER YOU TRIM IT UP ALL THE WAY     HAVE SOME ONE LOOK AT IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT   TO REPLACE MINE WHITCH I MIGHT HAVE TO DO  IS ABOUT 8 HUNDRED DOLLARS

  4. Trim is adjusting the angle on the motor get the best performance of the boat. When you start out you what the motor as far down in the water as possible and as you get going you tilt (trim) up to get the boat at the best angle to the water for more speed.

If the trim is not adjustable because the trim motor is bad the boat will work but not at its best. Just get a quote to have it fixed and subtract it from the selling price.
