The tropical zone is characterised by strongly monsoonal weather patterns, distinct wet and dry periods which are highly reliable, large quantities of rain and high intensity rainfall, high temperatures, and high rates of energy transformation. These have all combined to produce unique ecological systems, opportunities and challenges in the tropics.

The area  centered on the equator and limited in latitude by the Tropic of Cancer in the northern hemisphere, at approximately 23°26' (23.4°) N latitude, and the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere at 23°26' (23.4°) S latitude is referred to as the tropical zone or the torrid zone.

This region is typically characterised by hot and wet climate with rains mostly in the afternoon, (equatorial climate)
