  1. Two sentences can be joined by a conjunction such as "and" or "but." Usually a comma comes before the conjunction. This is called a compound sentence:

    Sentence 1: I'd love to go to the prom with you.
    Sentence 2: Someone else already asked me.
    Conjunction: "but"
    Compound Sentence: I'd love to go to the prom with you, but someone else already asked me.
