  1. seems that's the direct oppsite of schooling. it is the unlearning of what has been learned or imbibed in an educational setting.

  2. Unschooling can vary by parental/child choice, but in general, it's child-led learning, without using the strictures of curriculum based "gotta do this every single day" goal structures.

One unschooling family may let the child choose all the subjects.  Another may have the parent pick out subjects based on their knowledge of the child's interests and what they think the child should be learning at this stage of their education.  Others can be anywhere in between.

At our house, we consider ourselves unschoolers, but we take our lessons from anywhere that seems interesting.  Right now the boys are only doing language arts (writing, grammar, literature), spelling, science and math.  Language arts is a mix of a textbook series I like along with ideas the boys have generated for what to read (literature) and journaling independantly.  Spelling we use a textbook for, because the boys like the crossword puzzles and other study activities.  Math is more freeform, as is science (they are currently studying biomes, with them picking deserts as the first biome they wanted to review).

After Christmas we will switch things up a bit, dropping all language arts except the freeform journalling in favor of art instruction (visual, dramatic, and musical), but keeping spelling.  Math will stay, but science will swap out for a few months of social science.

  3. well it is at home, and it is a freeing of the mind from the traps and limitations that are set in kids when they go to public school-it is not limiting your kids to certain learning "days", "hours" or even subjects......it is learning ALL the time, but not in a confining way or setting. It is a non-limiting way of educating someone, and helping them learn to educate themselves.

  4. do you mean homeschooling? because i am in homeschool and it totally sucks...i have never hated my life any more than i do when i am doing freakin school at home...i have to teach myself everything and it's the hardest thing ever...oh and i hardly ever get to see my friends...last year i was in public school and then my parents felt like i needed to helpo at home more and they wanted to make me hate my life so they put me in home school....and just to let you know never do homeschool....and on top of all that i am moving so then i hate my life and parents even more...well there is my answer..

  5. I guess you can say that I'm unschooled because I picked the school that I wanted to use for homeschooling.  I also picked to play two instruments, the alto sax and violin.  I taught myself how to play the sax at age 11 and now learning to play the violin.  Every day is different for me.  These are the two things that I focus on most of the time.

Today I did a painting project that my mom wanted done.  I painted the slab of cement that my house is on.  It goes all the way around the house and is about a foot high.  I managed to do the front of the house today and will work on the rest during the week.  I spent about 1 1/2 hours on that.  I went to the store and bought some things that I needed, like razors and bathroom soap.  I also bought a new leash for my dog.  I was on the computer doing some surfing on the web.  I'm currently looking for some new violin music theory books.  I took an exam online for my last workbook that I finished yesterday.  After I'm done here I'll start another workbook and plan how many days it will take me to finish it.  I mailed out some letters that needed to be sent out.  I made a deposit into the bank.  Played about 20min. of video games.  I'll start my music lesson at 4pm.

I'm also home by myself until 2pm.  My mom gets home at that time.  I'm also 18.  My parents usually leave projects for me to do around the house, so I always have something to do.  I study on my own and ask for help when I am stuck on a question.

  6. Go to unschooling.com there is alot of info there

  7. It is self-directed learning, where you get to decide what you're interested in. It operates on the principle that learning is everywhere and you can't stop learning even if you try. Most of all, it rocks!
