What is up with the cat??!!

Our 2 year old tabby has had a litter of kittens but since they were born our male...who is the daddy...had been acting weird. There is one kitten in particular that he keeps sneaking out of the box and will take it to a corner in the room and stand over it with his eyes closed and he does these weird rythmic vocal noises...almost like he is singing to it! My concern is this...he has been known to kill kittens in the past...but I think the reason he killed it was because he sensed it was sick. Not just because he was being aggressive. Does this sound like he may be a threat to these kittens or am I just being overly concerned. The kittens are 3 weeks old now and I kinda feel like if he really intended on hurting one of them he would have made a move by now.
