I'm trying to purchase tickets online and their site won't accept any of my credit cards?! There's no way to contact them either other than to pay to talk to them on the phone! Are these trains normally sold out in late June/ early July from Rome to Naples or Naples to Venice or Venice to Rome?

  1. I similarly had this problem last year, trhying to make a booking on trenitalia from Australia and gave up.  However it is quite easy to make a booking even on the day from Termini in Rome to Milano, Bologna or wherever.  I simply used a machine kiosk, put in the money and it printed out two tickets immediately.  You only need to check the platform number with an assistant at one of the windows.  My Bologna train arrived only 5 or 6 minutes before departing again.

  2. I've had this problem before. What it turned out to be is that the credit card being used was not in the name of the user who logged in. Could this be what is happening to you?

The Trenitalia website is great for checking out train times but can sometimes be irritating to deal with. Pluses for buying on the site include special deals -- the tariff Amica can get you some great discounts -- and ticketless travel (no more having to stamp your ticket before getting on board).

However it is easier to just go to the station and get your ticket in one of the now fairly ubiquitous automatic ticket machines or even to go to a travel agent in Italy where you can sit down, calmly and quietly get your ticket.

    Good luck with your trip!

  4. trenitalia.com

they also had a commercial on the italian tv for their website a couple of years ago...

  5. The trains aren't sold out: you would get a message saying there are no seats available if that were the case. Usually if you are having a problem like this with the site it is because the credit card company isn't authorizing the transaction. They think it may be a fraudulent charge (eg, a stolen card). You may need to call the card company to reactivate the card.

  7. Trenitalia website always has some problems. It's irritating beyond any measure. Only the special price/offers end soon, the normal ticket are usually available when you come to the station and purchase them from the office or from the machine.

(ah, of course you can buy online only the trains with the shopping cart, which are not the majority, but i'm sure i don't need to tell you)

  8. I think that your best bet is to buy point to point tickets  when you arrive in Italy. If you are traveling throughout Europe that you may want to check into a Eurorail ticket.

Check out this site. Here you will find a lot of helpful information.  There is also a section for purchasing Eurorail tickets.

  9. Somtimes the site goes into tilt and theres nothing you can do except log out, cancell all your cookies and temps and try again. the trains arent sold out as I just checked and it let me go through with the booking. Just keep trying if it doesn't work today try tomorrow as its sunday and there are no technical staff to help you. or you could just book at the station when you get here....enjoy your trip and remember that here in the South we are in the middle of an African heatwave so lots of Linen and cotton clothes!!!
