What is worser than death?

I was watching some documentary, i forget what it was about-it's pretty much the only kind of programming i watch, but there was this dude--he struck me to be an arrogant, dim-wit--and he said something like "There are worse things in this life than death."

I wondered what he meant by that.

Death is like...The End.

I guess a constant torture until you DO die would seem to be the worst, but I wonder if anyone else thought of something. Or if someone thought death was the worst thing that could happen.

Any thoughts?

  1. Easy.   A slow death.   You are kept alive by the medical system and morales and constitution but there is no hope for you ever recovering.  My dad has a weak heart, which is assisted by a pacemaker and drugs but his heart is that weak that his lungs are starting to fill with fluid (so basically he is going to "drown" due to the lack of air).    The doctors have done everything they can for him, they know there will be a "complete systems failure" where all organs will shut down.  It is only a matter of time.

Doctors are committed to help.   That is all they can do.  So, my dad is basically gasping for air on a daily basis.   And it pains him.     This is an bad situation to be in.

And he is fully capable of understanding and reasoning "when he is not doped up".

And I am not going to speak of spiritual places because NOBODY has come back from there lately that I know of with a factual report.   Speculation (heresay, or stories) doesn't matter.

  2. That there are things worse than death is a statement of value, and most values are subjective--or different from person to person.  For example, to nihilist--or some one who believes that nothing has any real value, save maybe for pleasure--death can be pretty scary, because it means the 'end'.  However, to a person of virtue, like Socrates, Buddha, Epictetus, etc., who believes that following the 'truth' within them is their duty, then death isn't half as scary as disregarding their duty, or their 'goodness'.  Take Socrates for example, instead of renouncing his principles before the court of Athens, he chose to hold onto them even though it meant death to do so.  That is, for Socrates, rescinding his 'divine sign', as he called it, was a worse fate than death.  Lastly, Epictetus, the great stoic, believed that it was better to die than to do anything against your Will.  That is, it is better to die than to be a wimpy coward. And as a final thought: To many death isn't the end but a transition--a transition that depends on how we comport our minds, be it with virtue or with fear.  I hope this helps.

  3.   Torture seems to be it.

  4. knowing you can never die, but also knowing you are a limited being.

  5. something worse than death could be...

    1. losing all the people you love around you from gang violence, drunk driving, and life altering diseases

            There's a thought...

R.I.P Tipsy <---- the gOod die young

  6. I believe that guy was right. There are many things worse than death, like living a miserable life. Imagine living a life where you weren't loved, you had no one, you were abused and it seemed as though every attempt you made to make your life better failed. I think many people would be happy to die after living a merciless, depressing sad life. Death is simply the end to all your miseries sometimes.

  7. first understand what is death-then one can tell about it and compare for bad ,worse..death is only transition.death is only to body -not for atma.if no living being dies what happens to beings that are taking birth every minute.world would have been filled with.ones death is food for other..however there are many things worse than death.saying goes..a theif lives critisising his life daily.a sinner is afraid of his death.sages enjoy leaving this body -renouncing.study 'bhagavad gita' all your questions on death-better/worse  will get enlightened.

  8. losing edward cullen lol

  9. ...to know you could have done something to help and didn't...

  10. Having Bush as a third termer.

  11. Worse than death? I think you are still young and I am sure when you go through the life you will meet people, their lives worse than death. Fore example when a father is responsible for his son's death, this father will stay suffering till his death. And his death will be mercy for him. But if this father could see his son's death from anther side like God wants to put him in an exam this may be change the matter. Some times we see a person thinks that he lives a happy life but we think if we live his life this would be worse than death to us. For me I will choose death rather than live humiliating rich life with. and there is many examples like this. so (worse than) is realtive thing

  12. Enduring in time forever.

  13. ya...I can think of something.

Being alone for the rest of your life. I mean like no family, no friends, no one to love and spend time with. If something doesn't happen soon that may be me and I am going to freak out go nuts. Hope it doesn't, but it would be hard to live like that.

  14. I recently heard Sir Ian McKellan comment (relating to standing up to death threats) that there are some things worse than death, and one of them is not to live your life. I think he's on to something.

  15. numb is worse than death. once give up, the world suffers heavily

  16. First off, the is no such word as "worser" - that being said, I believe what could be worse than death is being dead and not knowing it, having no place to call home, having no money or way to earn money, being in a state where you can think clearly but have no way to express yourself, having to live inside a bubble you can never get out of, or being raped and ending up getting pregnant from it...... there are many more things I can think of that would be worse than death.  Death in many cases is better because it frees you from the commitment of having to live with unbearable things.

  17. How does lying in a bed, completely paralyzed, and not being able to speak, or do anything except blink your eyes sound?  You must be in this continuous state for the next 40 years.  That has happened to people.  How frightening is death now?

  18. u know death isint the end some say i think it is u just rot in the ground and every ones life goes on deatha int so bad

  19. death happens to everyone  maybe it ain't all as bad as it may be cracked up to be.

and lots of things happen in life that are plenty bad, leaving me to thing sometimes a person might be better off dead, afterall we euthenize animals and such calling it a kindness...just because someone is an arrogant fool doesn't mean that everything they way is wrong, it just means that no matter what they say they still may be an arrogant fool.

the arrogant and fool parts are an inside job, even a parrot can repeat the therory of relativity, doesn't mean he understands it (or maybe they do?)

  20. torture makes you feel that death is better than this. but i feel that seeing some1 whom you love in the critical stage or difficulty and you can't help them you feel the same. my aunt whom i loved alot left me 8 years ago, she had blood cancer, i failed to help her but the worst thing was i haven't given efforts for it and that feeling of helplessness kills you from inside, it kills your heart.

  21. To someone such as I, who is filled with so much wanderlust, imprisonment is worse than death. I am a roaming spirit, taking pleasure in the knowledge that I am the only person truly responsible for me. And having the ability to go as I please would be most devastating. I can with stand pain and I can withstand isolation, as long as I am free to do as I please.

Eternity wouldn't be so bad as long as there was constant stimulus, something new every couple hundred of years. Because its this stimulus that provides a root for wanderlust.

  22. Death is not the end, it's the transition between the earthly life and the heavenly life, unless of course you are condemned to burn in h**l for eternity, which would be worse than death.
