Question:

What is wrong with high schoolers and grammar these days?

Why on earth do so many of the posts on here contain such terrible grammar? I've read so many posts in the last day or two that contain innumerable run-on sentences, terrible vocabulary, horrible spelling, and little to no punctuation.

Has IM-speak really taken over this country?

Would someone PLEASE do something about this?!

...I fear I am losing faith in the next generation...

  1. we've had bad teachers and grammer is like math, if there is a gap in your understanding you can't move foward and it just gets worse.

and besides, we have school all day, we come on here to ask for help and try to resolve our problems. we don't care about grammer.

  2. Rap music and IM

    and education budget cuts

and basic lack of interest in school in general.

  3. I have to agree that we do use IM-speak a lot on here.

We use it because it is faster to type, since we do not have to worry about punctuation, vocabulary, or anything else for that matter.

It is kind of annoying, even though I have to admit that I use it myself quite often.

The important thing is that we know how to use it. We just don't feel the need to 100% of the time.

  4. i would say that the problem is that this generation has been exposed to much of this IM speak. all they do is text and IM and facebook and myspace one another all they are use to doing is talking like they are in a cheat room. i have seen it in school paper and this generation is even using it in every day talk.

  5. I would like to point out to one of the other answerers that your teachers are not the reason you can't use proper grammar and spelling.  Your teachers work their rears off trying to help you do well and you choose to do nothing.

People don't care.  They assume that so long as their point gets across, it doesn't matter what it looks like.  These people will start to care when they can't get a good job because their resume looks like a bad text message.  I for one am proud to use proper grammar and I'm not afraid to correct people when I get the chance.  IMs don't have to take over your life.

To you, the asker, kudos and thanks for sticking up for grammar.  Have you read "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves"??

  6. I see what you mean. I myself even use bad grammar on yahoo answers... and many online blogs... simply due to the fact I have other things to do. Although since I'm starting school soon I've been thinking that maybe I should practice better grammar when I type.

  7. Pretty scary.
