My 4 week old son has been grimacing after he eats and he arches his back alot and has recently begun spitting up a lot. He extends his neck out and looks like he is hurting. I was wondering if any one else has had this problem with thier child and could shed a little light.

If you have please tell me what you have done to correct the problem.

Thanks in advance for your answers, I just can't stand to see my little one so uncomfortable.

  1. Sounds like gas.  Is he breastfed or bottle?  If he's bottle fed, you might nee to check the nipple and make sure it's a slow flow.

Make sure he burps after each feeding and burp him half way through a feeding.  Try to keep him more upright after he eats.

  2. My kids did the same thing and it ended up being acid reflux. Make an appointment with his pediatrician and tell them what's been going on, they'll know what to do.

  3. Ask your doctor about Acid Reflux. Arching the back is a common sign of it, with spitting up a lot. Sometimes a grunting or a high pitched squeal.

  4. wind! always feed sitting him up and slightly tilted back, only slightly!

check your bottles have right flow teats! newbborn! Wind well, really pat quite hard, whilst he is sat upright! tilt his cot so he head is higher up!

  5. Back arching is a sign of reflux and lactose intolerance.

  6. My kids were all breast fed and I never had any problems with them. My nephew, however, was a different story. He would spit up constantly and always seemed to have a tummy ache. I took him to the pediatrician and the problem was that his tummy couldn't process the formula he was on. I had to go through a ton of formulas before finding one he could digest without problems. Talk to your pediatrician and follow their advice.

  7. the best thing for you to do .. instead of asking us is to go to your doctor. iam not trying to say anything about your mothering skills . but thats my answer.. i would feel bad saying something esspecialy with a infant .

  8. It sounds like he is gassy. Maybe watch what you are eating. Try to burp him the best you can. I also exercised my sons stomach muscles by bending his knees and then lift them up to his stomach. That helped his stomach muscles get stronger. I hope he feels better soon.

  9. He could have reflux - which is very common in babies. (It's kind of like heartburn in an adult) The doctor can give him a prescription to treat it and 99% of babies grow out of it before they turn a year old.

  10. Sounds like acid reflux. After feeding him keep him upright by holding him or putting him in his swing for at least 20-30 minutes after feeding him. Prop his crib mattress up, so that it's on a slight slope. If none of this works ask your doctor for a swallow study or an upper GI study. He can confirm reflux from those tests. If it is reflux he'll prescribe Zantac or Prevacid. Some docoters will just prescribe the medicine without doing tests, but I think you should be persisent on having the tests done so you can know for sure if it's reflux or something else.

  11. colic probably lay him on your lap and rub his back
