Question:

What is wrong with my apartment managers?

I have lived in an apt complex for 4 years with my husband, and next week we plan to hold his 40th birthday party in the rec room and outdoor bbq area. About a month ago I asked the manager if I could reserve the room for this event, and they said no--it's on a 1st come 1st served basis. They said I could post a flyer on the door, but when I did they removed it, and posted their own flyer basically telling residents to ignore OUR flyer (that the room can't be reserved). I am trying to plan a big party here, and it's a little disconcerting to not have a definite plan! Any advice? What should I say to the managers?

  1. if it's first come/first served, post someone in the room first thing in the morning and have them start decorating.  Put up decorations/signs that can be seen from outside (maybe those stake signs).  If you get there first, the room is yours, right?  You can't put up flyers, but you can the party very visible.

Make sure you actually talk to some people about your party and ask them to spread the word.  You should end up with a decent crowd.

As for what to say to the managers - you can take the high road & invite them to the party - or - just let it ride.  It seems they might be the type to hold a grudge against what they perceive to be a 'troublemaker' - their actions already indicate they're a little scattered.

  2. Pool's closed due to AIDS.

  3. Since this is a shared community space the only logical thing to do is post another flyer that also includes an invitation to any neighbor that wishes to attend. If you don't want your neighbors comming to the party than your only other option is to hold it somewhere else. This way the room is "reserved" and you may actually get to know a few nice people.
