What is wrong with my car

Question

This morning I noticed that my car was driving funny. I would hit the gas. You could hear the engine revving up, but the car was not accelerating. After a few seconds of hitting the gas, the car finally got going.

This evening, when i was out, the car did the same thing. I went in the store and when I came out and tried to leave my car wouldn't move at all. I hit the gas. The engine revved up, but the car wouldn't go anywhere. It finally started, but broke down. I got towed home.

Now, my car wont go at all or only go a few feet and then stop moving.

The car never cuts off or anything, it just wont move

Check your tranny fluid.

if your car is manual then the clutch plate needs replaceing if auto could be a number of things from low fluid to buggerd talk converter and blocked filter. lines. ect.....

Have you ever checked the transmission fluid?  It could be very low on fluid.

This sounds pretty familar of what happened to my car. It sounds like your transmission is going because on my 02 ford explorer i would gas it and the rmp's would fly up and i wouldnt move and then it would go into gear and it would jerk and i would finally move, and mine also broke down. So ya you might want to take it to a automotive place and get a diagnostics test ran on it to make sure.

what is the condition of the transmission fluid?  nice clear red fluid?  dark red with a burnt smell?

is it reving with no load?

check the transmission linkage.  is the linkage being engaged at all?

sounds like a tranny rebuild is on the way.

give details on car make model and mileage.
