Question:

What is wrong with my car?

On the freeway, my car broke down horribly. I was losing power, rather quickly, to the point where putting on the gas made the RPMs go upwards of 7 or 8000, and I was getting no power. Somehow I got to the shoulder, and there was smoke coming from some component. I know the engine did not overheat. Inside the car, the gears no longer shift (free-moving gearshift) so its undrivable. It's a manual transmission Toyota Celica 1994. I hope its just the transmission but I bet more is messed up in there, any thoughts?

  1. sounds like a tune up or catalytic converter. simple

  2. Sounds like you clutch has failed.  The clutch is the part between your engine and transmission.  The clutch transfers power from your engine to your transmission.  It would act like having your clutch pedal pushed in all the way or part of the way.  The smoke would be from the slipage between your flywheel and clutch surface.  If your flywheel is ok the clucth sould run around 500.00 to 900.00 installed.

  3. It sounds like a transmission problem.  On a 15 year old car, the repair will probably exceed the value of the car.

  4. Certainly sounds like a transmission problem but I am confused by one thing.  You say "the gears no longer shift(free-moving gear shift).

If that means that the stick is frozen in place now but used to move then you are looking at major internal component failure; your cheapest fix will be a used transmission 150-800 dollars plus installation.

If that means the stick slides into gear as always put pusing the gas doesn't cause movement you could be looking at something as simple as a clutch replacement (very likely on a car this age). 150 dollars to do it yourself around 500 (+or-) do have a pro do it.

Can't tell for sure without seeing the vehicle but I hope this helps.

  5. Sounds like the clutch assembly failed.  The smoke was from the clutch disk slipping, due to insufficient pressure from the pressure plate.
