okay, i just got a 2004 grand prix, and i went to fill up the tank *i way over filled the tank* and when i went to start the car, it would start, but immeadiately stall out.. it happened like 6 times until i got annoyed and pressed on the gas, and it started,,, but my question is, can a car do this because i over filled the tank, or could somethin else be bad in it, like the fuel filter?

  1. over filling won't stall the engine. you may have a fuel filter problem or just a one time hic-cup in the computer if it continues take the beast in.

  2. If you've just bought the car, do All of it's maintenance. But, I believe the fuel filter is the nonserviceable type in the gas tank. You'll save alotta $ and have a dependable car if you take care of her. If it's an automatic trans, it's time for the fluid & filter change. Don't get suckered into a trans flush. Also, it's time for  coolant maintenance.

  3. It's a possibility. Take it to a mechanic.

  4. did the check engine light come on and stay on?

Its hard to guess what it could be... but it shouldn't matter if your topped off the gas tank... that alone should not make it stall.

if the check engine light is on stop in at an auto zone... they will hook up the diagnostic machine and check it out for free

  5. "over filling up the tank" does not have nothing to do with it, it sounds like your car needs some maintenance, just do the oil change, maybe the transmission too...just change the fluid, nothing fancy along with the filter, oh and to be cheap, just use a gasoline additive to clean the fuel injectors ( STP fuel injector) just add it to the tank when you fill up your car
