What is wrong with my clothes dryer?

A few months ago it seemed to get overheated and would cut off and would only come back on after it had cooled. About a week ago it started making this horrible grinding sound, smells like rubber burning and still runs even when the door is open. I haven't used it since then. Any advice on how to fix this? Thanks!

Sounds like you need another dryer by the time you replaced the timer and belt you could buy a new dryer.

the belt is loose, off, or missing.

is it a gas dryer?

is the vent rube plugged with lint?

Because you smelled burning rubber, I would conclude it's either your timer or motor or both.  

You're right, don't use the machine.  You could call on the phone and ask for advise and what the possibilities are that the machine has seen its better day.  They will probably tell you that they will have to come over and take a look at the machine before making an determination.  Let them do their job.
