What is wrong with my computer/internet?

I am having some probs with connecting to my internet (Netzero). I get a message that says that no dial tone was detected. I made sure that the lines are connected to the right places but still the internet doesn't work. Also My phone has been making an annoying noise since the internet didn;t work. The computer tells me that my modem is working properly but is it really? What's the problem?

You know what? To me this sounds like a problem on your ISP's side... Contact their Tech Support...

is there noise on the line even when the modem is not turned on.

if yes then you will need to have your line checked by your isp.

if no then replace your micro filters. These are supposed to hide the noise made by the modem communicating with your isp.

if you have many filters then phone the isp and ask them to monitor the line while you unplug and replug each filter one by one.

micro filter failure is quite common. if you never used the line for voice calls then you wouldn't need a micro filter.

if the above doesn't help then plug the modem into the master socket (to eliminate potential problems with extensions)

i personally hate usb modems and always recommend adsl routers. These will give you more feedback about the quality of the line and have firewalls built in and ofcourse allow more than one pc to access the web.

your pc saying that the modem is ok just means that it can communicate with it. It does not mean that the modem can communicate with your isp

Change your micro filter, also replace other micro filters in teh house that has a phone connected to it.

it may be ur modem if it says there's bo problem with it

you can call the company providing the service so they can take a look at your modem or check the box outside with the phone line call the phone company
