Question:

What is wrong with my daylillies?

I planted some daylilly bulbs (?) roots(?) that I purchased from Lowe's in back in April. I am in zone 6b, on the TN/KY Border. The foliage has come up and spread everywhere in one part of my flowerbeds, but NO blooms. This morning I noticed something wierd, instead of the flower, it has sprouted up something that looks like grass seed , or kind of fern-like things. I have never had a problem growing daylillies, and I have never seen anything like that before.

Does anyone know what that would be and why they didnt bloom?

  1. It is normal for perennials to NOT bloom the first year they are planted.  Too much foliage might mean too much nitrogen.  Too much nitrogen in the soil or applied as a fertilizer will mean no blooms.

  2. Knowing Lowe's and their plant material, there is a very good chance you did not get day lilies. Wait until next spring and see what comes up.

  3. I agree.. packaging could have been wrong!

If you are willing to take a pic and post, perhaps we might be able to identify what you have instead!

Also, I would suggest going up to Lowe's!  If you purchased on your credit card... go up to talk to the manager... they should give you a store credit.... they are pretty good about it!
