Question:

What is wrong with my electric power drill?

I was using my Black & Decker power drill, drilling into a brick wall, when it looked like there were some sparks appearing through the vents of the drill engine. There seemed to be a smell of something burning. I stopped using it immediately, let it cool down and then tried again but it won't work. I changed the fuse, but still no good.

Is it screwed or do you think it's reparable?!?! Any ideas??? Thanks

  1. SOunds like you have a bad or broken brush. It can be replaced.

  2. Sounds like the brushes have worn out or one brush has broken, all power tools spark inside that's how they work but excessive sparking is not right.

It can be repaired along as it is a known make, Makita, Bosch, B&D (Yours is B&D) as the bits are easier to come by, but you have to look at how old the tool is, the repair would coast something around £25 to £30 (inc labour) and if it would only cost £40 to replace you might as well buy a new one.

  3. Take the advice already given here. Buy a new drill. This is a better option if the tool is out of warranty. Black and Decker usually offer a two year guarantee. If your drill is older than this it would be more cost affective to buy a new one as you would have a " new drill " with the 2 year guarantee for slightly more than it would cost to repair the faulty one. I have had personal experience of a B & D service centre asking £50 Labour + £2.70 parts. Crazy. By the way do not try your drill again, It may have a short, if its broken its broken. It can be repaired / replaced. You cannot.

  4. Sounds like the brushes are worn out,You need some new ones.

  5. You might have cooked either the field or the armature. If it is a home use type drill just throw it away. If you paid $80 or more, take it to a repair shop and get an estimate on fixing it. Chances are its not just the brushes or a switch.

  6. Sounds like the carbon brushes are worn or damaged. You couls take it apart and reverse the brushes. Worth a try.
