It is open and when I try to close it, the motor runs but the door doesn't move.

  1. This happened to me recently. if you see a metal piece moving along the track on its own without the door moving with it, it means the latch has disengaged. Get the door manually in the fully up position and re-engage it with the latch. It is an easy fix, especially if the latch has a cord.

  2. If this door uses a ball s***w, the carriage lever may be flipped so it is not engaging with the s***w. The carriage is that black plastic part that slides in the usually silver track and is connected to the usually black metal arm attached to the garage door. There is a little metal lever, usually with a string on it, that can flip back and forth to allow manual operation of the door in case of power outage.

I did once have to replace a carriage because the teeth that engage the ball s***w were broken. Someone tried unsuccessfully to force the door open and broke it.
