What is wrong with my gourami?

I have a red dwarf gourami who doesn’t look well. It has been on the bottom of the tank all day just sitting there. It has lost a lot of colour and even looks transparent in some places. It has lumps in its body which look similar to constipation and has a dark greyish colouring along the top of it.

I have 30 other fish in the tank, angels, tetras, platies, Borneo suckers, kuhli loaches and other gourami- They all look healthy and happy- eating, swimming, playing etc. The tank is not over stocked, they are all still young and it’s been stocked taking into account their adult size.

It’s top fin looks add, like its standing up straight too.

What could be wrong?

  1. Is the other Gourami a male? if so he could be beating up on your red dwarf. Causing him stress leading to this odd behavior. Otherwise, I would say you just got a sick fish and I would put him in a hospital tank to make sure it doesn't spread if it is contagious and keep an eye on him.

*Edit* Also keep an eye on the Angels, they may be beating up on him too.

  2. Unfortunately, Dwarf Gouramis are essentially plagued by Iridovirus at the moment.  There is no cure, and appears to be no end in sight.  For the time being, I would quarantine him and keep him as comfortable as possible, or even euthenize him.  The darkening color, lumps, and inactivity are all conducive with an Iridovirus infection.
