My guinea pig is making some weid wheezing nose like he is having trouble breathing. Also he has a brown discharge coming from his nose. I just got him 2 days ago and have him housed with my other male guinea pig is healthy. What could be wrong with him and how can I treat him? Dont say to take him to a vet because I really can not afford to take him to the vet. Thanks

  1. Your piggy has an upper respiratory infection and will need to see a vet to live. You need to get him an antibiotic to treat the infections. Especially if you got him from a petstore.

Piggies go downhill very quickly, they are prey animals and hide their illnesses until they cant anymore. so once they are showing symptoms, it needs to be checked out immediately.

You shouldnt have him if you cant afford a visit to the vet. People fail to realize exactly how expensive piggies are because they are small. They are considered exotics and emergency vets charge twice as much for a guinea pig compared to my great dane.

This explains a uri and even if your piggy isnt showing symptoms of a uri, it is best to get him to a cavy savvy vet today to make sure it isnt one, they are deadly if not treated.

  2. First, call the place you bought him from and find out if they have any kind of health guarantee with the pets they sell..maybe you can take him to the vet they recommend for pets they sell.  If no help comes from them, call your own vet to describe the problem & ask for advice.  If you have to take him in, you can probably make payments.  Plus, you don't want to get your other guinea pig sick right?

  3. Take him to a vet. Probably he was sick when you got him.

Trust me some Guinea pigs dont show their health. But sometimes you can see it by their noses or something. I had a guinea pig, he didnt show it, but he was sick. He ate healthy and looked healthy. But he died a week ago.

  4. if it is older, it will soon die of old age as with my piggy.....but if it is still a baby, you bought the runt, and it most likely wont survive,or u bought a sick one, witch if it cant go 2 the vet, it most likely will die, srry 2 say, ;(

  5. i dont mean to distress you, but a few days before my guinea pig died she was weezing, and coughing, get some medicine  for it, that is really the best thing- im sorry if you dont want to go to the vet -- your gunea pig might die if you dont-- good luck and dont get her wet at all.

  6. Well my male piggy was allergic to Pine so yes, put him on Aspen bedding asap!  And there is soemthing called marvel aid that is made for birds but I use it on my guinea pigs! All 5 of em. Go to a pet store and ask if they have marvel aid. It works wonders for my piggies!

  7. it really the perfect choice to take him to a vet but...

  8. kate gave you great advice about uri's.

URI's will not cure themselves and are very deadly. I almost lost my first pig to a URI. You will also need to seperate your pigs. URI's are contagious to your other pig.

As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to take care of your animals. That includes vet bills. It can be expensive to own pets, but that's what we take on when we get pets. After you take care of this situation, I suggest you start an emergency vet fund. Just a few dollars a week will keep you prepared if another situation arises. Good Luck!

The bedding isn't the problem. It wouldn't cause the discharge. Yes,  a pig may sneeze a bit from dusty bedding, but not to the degree that it causes wheezing and discharge.
