Ok , my toshiba laptop was just fine until a little while ago when all of the sudden, I turn it on and all i get is the black screen with white letters. This is exactly what is says:

SMART Failure predicted on Hard Disk 0: TOSHIBA MK4025GAS-(PM)

WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.

Press F1 to continue.

So then I press F1 and the screen goes black again. A little while later it says in white letters:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>/system32/hal.dll.

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Then I press a key and it starts over again. WHAT COULD BE WRONG??? And how much might it cost to fix this problem. Any other information regarding my problem is also appreciated. Thanks.

  1. Humm, I had a toshiba, when i took it places where it's hot the mother board had gotten some of it's solder melted of and then damaged several things on the pc....beyonde repairable. I think i got the same kind of error message when i turned it on. But i got red lines going down the screen which were about an inch appart from each other. So basicaly i couldn't use my pc.

  2. go to another computer and click computer/mycomputer C:\Windows\System32 and find he file, save it on a flash drive or something, and copy it into the folder on ur computer, it can work in safe mode i think

  3. Your hard disk is probably going bad or is already damaged. The SMART error comes from a technology called S.M.A.R.T. that monitors the life od a hard disk. Once it detects possible errors that could lead to failure, it warns you.

You need to back up your data ASAP, if you have anything on the system you need to save. You can download a special version of the Linux operating system called Knoppix. Burn this to a CD and you can boot up your system and use the tools in Knoppix to recover your files. Read the two links below for some information on how to do this.

You should probably replace that drive, too. If you're getting SMART errors and corrupted files, it's probably on the way out. Do your backup stuff right away.
