  1. he's right

  2. Where are you located?  Are entire branches dead or are the dead needles spread uniformly throughout the trees?  If there are dead needles throughout but the tips are green it might just be the old needles preparing to drop (like all other trees evergreens shed their old leaves, ie needles, but they retain this years growth at least).

If entire branches are dead it could indeed be bark beetles, Pine Wilt, Zimmerman Pine Moth, several different fungi, and probably a few other things I'm not thinking of right now.

Your best bet is to take a sample branch, with both living and dead foliage on it, to your local extension office.  They'll take it and run some tests and should be able to give you some more informed feedback.  You'll need to know some basic information about the trees such as species and cultivar (if it applies), age, exposure to environmental factors (wind, sun, possible chemical applications, etc.).  There's usually a small fee involved as well.

I wish I could be more help but without having a lot more info, and actually seeing the trees its pretty tough to make anything more than a guess.  Good Luck!
