What is wrong with my windows vista? Slow operation?

i just bought a brand new hp dv5 1002 nr yesterday and whenever i try to install either a trial program or a program from a dvd rom, it takes around 5 minutes to initialize and begin setup or after the program has been installed, it takes 5 minutes to start the program. ( i have 3 gigs RAM and an AMD Turion x2 64) Is there something i can turn off in the control panel to make these run faster or is there a recent patch or something? PLEASE HELP!!!!

p.s. after the program starts, the laptop has no problems running the program (no freezing or "lag")

If you still have your receipt, Take the Hp dv5 1002 back. Then go buy a macbook or macbook pro!

Try Dr Mechanic or one of those programs which tunes up your pc. It sounds like a software bottleneck somewhere.  Give it a decent virus check as well.  I mean with your machine specs, everything should run like lightning.

If you need a replacement firewall/antivirus/antispyware, use Comodo Firewall, Avira AntiVir/AVG Free 8/Avast! antivirus, and Spyware Doctor Starter Edition from the Google Pack. I wouldn't get rid of some of the HP games, as they are full versions.

Windows vista is both horrible and slow.  When I worked in a tech center I refused to touch it, but you can put it into classic mode and/or turn down your image properties and graphic settings.  If you have shared graphics you can try getting a dedicated graphics card too as the new graphical interface is the biggest memory hog and uses your ram.
