my zebrafish is acting weird. all my other fish are fine and are swimming around. the zebrafish is resting its bloated belly of the gravel floor and its gills are moving rapidly. its belly has been large for some time which makes no sense to me. there is another zebrafish with a belly that is not as round but there is a round shape none the less. so i dont understand why the the zebrafish could have eggs at all. i have no idea what is going on, a little help??

  1. Danios in roe (carrying eggs) do not sit on the bottom-- they would still swim at least a little, and maintain their bouyancy normally.  Dropsy is a likely diagnosis, unfortunately.  Do you notice the scales pineconing outwards ( http://flippersandfins.net/Images/Dropsy... ) from the body?  This is a definitive sign.  Treatment is very difficult, but your best bet would be a strong, easily absorbed antibiotic like kanamycin (Kanaplex) or maybe minocycline (Maracyn 2).  To help reduce the swelling, consider adding 1/4 teaspoon of epsom salt per 10 gallons of water.  Also, keep the water in pristine condition, as other irritation will in no way help.

Other than that, there isn't a whole lot you can do.  Maybe try feeding it some high-fiber food like brine shrimp, peas, or other blanched vegetables in case it's constipation, though this is unlikely.  On the off chance that it is pregnant, just let it be, and maybe isolate it so the eggs stand a chance, and she can avoid being bothered by other fish.

    EDIT: It does not.

  2. Are they zebra danios?

I think you should do some research on "dropsy" or "bloat" or "swim bladder disease."  Sounds like possible swim bladder problems to me, but I suggest you visit the website below to help diagnose the problem.  it is one of the many sites that you can use to help with your fish troubles.

    Good Luck!
