so last night I went to use my 4 wheel drive, just 4 hi, I dropped it in and right away a whining sound started, it pulled really hard to the right, and when I turned a corner it felt like the vehicle was humping around the front wheels? so I got back to the street disengaged it and instead of going off right away it waited a few seconds then clunked really hard and disengaged? anyone in here A dodge 4 wheel drive guy? I Have never had anything happen like this and I all have ever driven is Dodges, and I cannot see a single mechanical thing wrong from underneath! its an 86 ramcharger with the 318,.automatic and 4wd. the previous owner put a 3 inch lift kit on but that all looks kosher, and when I shift into reverse, the whole vehicle clunks and then engages, but all the other gears seem fine and the tranny doesnt slip.

  1. maybe the car is just old and its broken

  2. Could be a u joint problem, or even an axle or wheel bearing up front, they are known for wear issues, does it have auto locking hubs , if so, they are suspect also.

  3. The front end and transmissions aren't know as strong points for dodge. My friend blew his front end gears yesterday. Check to make sure both hubs (manual I assume) are turning and engaging when you want them to. Then check the front end bearings and ball joints and all that good stuff.

The tranny might be to blame for the back up problems, if it shifts and dosn't have enough RPMs in the engine, the car will stutter and stall if it gets really bad (this happened to my truck) I just gave it a little gas in neutral before shifting into reverse.
