  1. x^2 -2.5x = 1

    x^2 - 2.5x +1.5625 = 2.1625

    (x- 1.125)^2 = 2.1625

    x - 1.125 = +/- sqrt(2.1625)

    x = 1.125 +/- sqrt(2.1625)


  2. 4x^2 - 10x - 4=0

    2x^2 - 5x - 2=0

    using the quadratic formula x=[-b +- sqrt (b^2 - 4ac)]/2a,

    x= 2.85 (3 sig fig) or x = -0.351 (3 sig fig)
