Xanax is the trade name for alprazolam, a benzodiazepine tranquilizer.  If your doctor prescribes it for anxiety, it will calm you down.  If you take it for fun, in the large amounts (2+ mg) popular among those who abuse drugs, it will make you sleepy, make you pretty unaware of what's going on around you, give you amnesia, and, in combination with alcohol, can easily kill you.
