  1. I want to be like my riding instructor and instruct rider and train horses.  I would love to work at a big public stable like her and help riders improve their skills.  I'm saving up my money to go to Lake Erie College when I get out of school in 4 yearsand get a degree in horse training/rider instruction:)

hah I'm also saving my money to buy an amazing event horse so I can go to the olympics someday!!(:

  2. i think it would be awesome to be a track vet and then write about my expiriences cause i love horses and writing so how cool would it be to write about horses?!?! i dream of the days i will be living in montana on my ranch just livin' the dream....

    *sigh*

  3. NO !!

  4. i want to a breeder (don't worry, not a fugly one!) and a trainer (people/ horses). i also want to be a photographer. i am also considering being a teacher so that i can have all summer off to just me, my family if i have one, and my horses!

  5. I am going to be a AQHA horse trainer who has lessons, boarding, and trainging who shows at the big shows around America! lol i do the showing part i just haven't started my own barn cuz i'm to young

  6. I want to be a race horse trainer. I love TBs and it would be great to have trained a great horse.

I also want to be a vet. I would love to be able to save the next Ruffian, Go for Wand, Barbaro, Eight Belles, Pine Island, or Lost in the Fog ect.

  7. The horse business is a tough one. and it has changed so much.  Used to be that a person would apprentice at a barn, clean stalls and do grunt work for the privledge of having the trainer teach them some stuff, over time the trainer would give them more and more, and finally the person would feel like they knew enough to go out on their own.  These days, many people learn by years of lessons, which is great, except they miss the part about what to do with the real problem, dangerous horses.  If they are paying for lessons it is not likely the trainer would have them ride such a beast, not to mention liability these days, everyone is so litigation happy that a trainer would be afraid of getting sued.  So they miss a lot of the old fashioned horsemanship that used to go on.

If you want to instruct, one way is to take lots and lots of lessons, it helps you develop a pattern for learning, how to run a lesson etc.  The instructor certification programs, from what we have seen, are not worthy of much.  The other thing you can do is volunteer at a training barn or work for lessons, or work and then on your own time hang out with the trainer to learn all you can.

Bottom line: if you want to train or instruct take tons of lessons, if you can't afford that do grunt work in exchange for the trainer's knowledge.  Remember they have had numerous years of experience, and you can't possibly absorb it all in a short time. We haven't had an apprentice here for 10 years.  No one wants to work that hard anymore.

    good luck

  8. Im like you! I LOVE horses very much and want to do something with horses. I did find a few options but there were some that didnt fit me well. I am thinking of being a instructor or train horses. It's up to you- I dont really care which I pick, its choices that come along the way that might lead you to where you want to go.

  9. I'm doing my dream job now, i have a horse rescue...Had to think twice about it today...One of the mares i took in wasn't a very happy camper today and nearly put me through a fence.  Had to leave for a few to get myself together, needless to say i had to much anger at that moment to work with that horse...We worked it out, she knows now I'm keeper of the feed and I'm head horse...Well see tomorrow if she remembers LOL

  10. I'd really like to be an interior designer/architict!

id also love to write books in my spare time!

  11. GDMI Guide dog mobility Instructor which i am getting the qualifications thta i need in order to apply at next years intakes.

this is my dream job, i also wish to have a few horses of my own and rescue and rehome horses as and when i can

    And write books :)

  12. My dream job is to be an Islamic studies elementary school teacher, but my 6 year old son`s dream job is to be a veterinarian. My children absolutely adore horses.

  13. I want to be a large animal/small animal/herd animal  veterinarian. That is working with horses. I did an entire project on it. I had to figure my average anual salary, where I wanted to work (fake of course), and MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more!

  14. I have two dream jobs.

The first would be to go to the WNFR, kick butt, make a name for myself, and from that build a proffesional training career.

The second would be to become the next Pam Minick and be a correspondent for proffessional rodeo. But that would be after being a trainer for sometime.

  15. I would love love love to be an equine vet.

My mom tells me that they don't make a huge amount of money unless you're in a big horse area, like Kentucky (I don't know whether this is true or not, but it doesn't matter...) but she always tells me to push for it. I especially want to go into the area of surgery in the career, because last year I thought I wanted to be a doctor because I watched a surgery, but then I realized I wanted to make a career with horses.

Haha and I totally agree with the poster above me that said it would save money...no paying for farm calls :)

And I will live my dream...huge old farm with a big barn full of horses!

Good luck everyone on their future careers!

  16. I wish to do graphic deisgn

    And

    Train horses.

Its true many in the horse biz need to do something else as well. Unless they have a big bank to start or have some "in" in the horse world.

  17. Your parents are right - very few people can make a comfortable living in the horse world as a rider, trainer or breeder.  The biggest problem is acquiring land.  You'd have to have a farm already in your family that you could use.  You'd be best off to get a well-paying job, to finance your horse "hobby" on the side.  You could still teach or train, but you would not have to rely on that income for living expenses.

I'd like to own a farm and raise and train ponies, and maybe also run a before/after school care program involving working/riding horses.  But, instead, I have 6 acres and a nice job with the federal government which provides enough money for my 4 horses, mortgage, and everything else., as well as good health insurance and enough leave and flexibility to do what I need to do in my non-work life.

  18. My dream job is to be a equestrian technician. That dream is starting to unravel for I'm working on getting my degree in animal science most partly equestrian science. I love horses! I want to be able to help people and their horses. Also it would save me on my vet bill. Beats having someone come out to my barn to do some shots or stitching when I can do it myself..LOL

  19. yes i love horses  so do you want to be a friend and talk more about horses

  20. yes horses

  21. My horse job fantasy is to be paid to travel the globe and ride all of the different vacation equestrian trips from Mongolia to Patagonia to Africa to wherever and everywhere and then write magazine articles detailing each experience. That would be combining the 3 things I have a true passion for: horses, writing, and seeing what is best seen by horseback. Yeah, I know, I went serious "dream + horse" in answering this question ;P

  22. I agree, it's next to impossible to make your living solely with horses - at least, not without huge start-up funds.  Who is it that said "The only way to make a million dollar horse is to start out with ten million dollars"?  It's true!  Horse jobs generally pay terribly, and seldom come with benefits like health insurance and 401 (k)s.  (And believe you me...THOSE ARE IMPORTANT!)

It's hard to choose JUST one thing having to do with horses!  If pay and benefits were of no consideration, I think I'd be happy just being a stable hand like I used to do when I was a teenager.  It's fun to ride and train horses, but you really form more of a bond with them when you do everything around the barn, from mucking to turnout to exercising.  I have had many "horsey" jobs over the years, from saddle cleaner to stall mucker to trail leader to handler-of-crazy-fjord-stallions... :)and the happiest times I had during those years were when I was essentially in charge of the whole barn and all of its operations, from installing new gates in the pasture to feeding the horses dinner.  I'm sure I'm not the only person who feels most at home in a stable!

I should add that I seriously considered being an equine vet, until I thought about it realistically and decided I wasn't OK being "married" to a career, even one that I loved.  I love horses and biology, but I would NOT love having to have my business cell phone with me every single day, 24/7.

  23. I am lucky, I do what I love. I train horses. But honestly unless you are ready to live in pretty much poverty then go for it. Training horses can make a living and that about it. If you train show horses you can do better but all your money goes to the horses because they are what makes your bills. And untill you win that million dollar purse, you rairly make a great living. There are exceptions to the rule, if your realy good at marketing, then you can be the next Perelli or Monty Roberts.

But the only people who make good money with horses are the ones who win at the shows concistantly. Luck

  24. When I guide trail rides, guests always ask me, "Do you get paid well doing this?"  I usually reply that I love what I do but it doesn't pay the bills...Kevin H had it right.  Fortunately for me a fire was just lit under my butt and I have finally gotten the initiative to go to school.  I have started for Pre-Vet Medicine and I plan to continue until I have my doctorate in Large Animal Vet (mainly bovine and equine).  Your parents are right, you will struggle but it makes it more worthwhile in the long run...but do what you want, do what makes you happy.  I think that most people don't even figure out what they really want to do until they are well in their 30's.  Good luck to you and your endeavors!

  25. I'd say go into physical therapy working with horse :). You should go into physical therapy with children, especially and then train them on horseback! It's a great way to go about things, you get to have the aspect of horses but you can also have a bit more money and help people all in the same thing ^_^.

  26. i am thinking about trying to get into the mounted police becoz i love horse riding
