It's a common mistranslation by English speaking people that they mistake "Land" (which means "country") with "Bundesland" ("federal state"), as the meaning of the use of "Land" can only be told from context. When talking about Germany only, the "Bundes-" is skipped and the shortened form "Land" ist used. So I am living in the land of Bavaria, in the state of the Federal Republic of Germany, one of the countries of the European union, would be: "Ich lebe im Land Bayern, im Land Deutschland, ein Land der Europäischen Union." That would be perfectly correct.
