  1. I follow the Five Core Principles of National Board

Proposition 1: Teachers are Committed to Students and Learning

    * NBCTs are dedicated to making knowledge accessible to all students. They believe all students can learn.

    * They treat students equitably.

    * They recognize the individual differences that distinguish their students from one another and they take account for these differences in their practice.

    * NBCTs understand how students develop and learn. They respect the cultural and family differences students bring to their classroom.

    * They are concerned with their students’ self-concept, their motivation and the effects of learning on peer relationships.

    * NBCTs are also concerned with the development of character and civic responsibility.

Proposition 2: Teachers Know the Subjects They Teach and How to Teach Those Subjects to Students.

    * NBCTs have mastery over the subject(s) they teach. They have a deep understanding of the history, structure and real-world applications of the subject.

    * They have skill and experience in teaching it, and they are very familiar with the skills gaps and preconceptions students may bring to the subject.

    * They are able to use diverse instructional strategies to teach for understanding.

Proposition 3: Teachers are Responsible for Managing and Monitoring Student Learning.

    * NBCTs deliver effective instruction. They move fluently through a range of instructional techniques, keeping students motivated, engaged and focused.

    * They know how to engage students to ensure a disciplined learning environment, and how to organize instruction to meet instructional goals.

    * NBCTs know how to assess the progress of individual students as well as the class as a whole.

    * They use multiple methods for measuring student growth and understanding, and they can clearly explain student performance to parents.

Proposition 4: Teachers Think Systematically about Their Practice and Learn from Experience.

    * NBCTs model what it means to be an educated person – they read, they question, they create and they are willing to try new things.

    * They are familiar with learning theories and instructional strategies and stay abreast of current issues in American education.

    * They critically examine their practice on a regular basis to deepen knowledge, expand their repertoire of skills, and incorporate new findings into their practice.

Proposition 5: Teachers are Members of Learning Communities.

    * NBCTs collaborate with others to improve student learning.

    * They are leaders and actively know how to seek and build partnerships with community groups and businesses.

    * They work with other professionals on instructional policy, curriculum development and staff development.

    * They can evaluate school progress and the allocation of resources in order to meet state and local education objectives.

    * They know how to work collaboratively with parents to engage them productively in the work of the school.

  2. The most important gift one can give a child is the gift of a good education.  An education that is relevant to them, to their needs, and to their interests, as well as to their future.  An educator needs to see students as individuals, and treat them as such, so that they can best serve the student's needs and help them understand things by bringing their real life into their learning.  I think that if more teachers took the time to listen to their students, to find out why they have blocks in their learning, more children would be successful in school.

A good education is the cornerstone to a successful life.  As we continue on in the 21st century, education becomes increasingly more important.  Generation Y is all about being connected, being wired, and being on the move.  In my generation, we would sometimes think outside the box, but generation Y kids LIVE outside the box, and getting an education is essential to keep them competitive in THEIR world.  By giving the kids  a better education, we are assuring a better future for ourselves, because these kids are the leaders of tomorrow.

Students often have trouble following a lesson if they do not understand how what they are learning relates to them, or to real life.  It is important to help students see how the skills that are being taught apply to them... not in 20 years, but in their current situations.  This can be a daunting task for some of the things they need to learn, but it greatly increases interest and learning.  If one can bring information from the latest TV shows, video games, or trends, or sports into the lesson, kids will often listen more and respond better to the lesson.  I believe it is important to be innovative when using the kid's interests in the lessons, and for an educator to not be afraid to try new things to get their students to learn.

Every student who enters a teacher's classroom is different.  They come from different home lives, different socioeconomic back grounds, different religious back grounds, and have been taught different values.  I believe that students should all be treated as the individuals that they are, and should not be shoe pegged into a preconceived notion of what they should be.  In my opinion, if someone treats all students as average, they will all become average, but if they respect all students' individuality, students are more likely to be who they are, and not spend so much time striving for mediocrity.  By focusing on the individual learning styles and needs of each student, educators can more successfully bring the lessons to the students, instead of trying to bring the students to the lesson.

Finally, I believe that there are teachers in the field today that do not take the time to listen to their students.  Hearing what they say is one thing, but really listening requires active skills.  A teacher should repeat back, in their own words, what a student is saying to make sure they understand the student, particularly if the student has come to them with an issue.  If an educator acts like their problems are insignificant or unimportant, it makes the student feel insignificant and unimportant.  But by listening intently and letting the student know they are understood, it makes a big difference.  One approach to this is the feel, felt, found method – let students with problems know, I understand how you feel, others have felt this way, and they found that by doing XYZ it made it easier to deal with.  Students feel understood with this method – it is a very successful way of managing student's feelings and helping them feel heard and understood.

In a nutshell, we need to remember that students are people, and we need to give them the tools to succeed in life through an education, bring the lesson to their level instead of making them reach for something they don't want to reach for, respect them as individuals, and above all else, listen to them.
