I have pcos and my doctor wont prescribe anything other than exercise. I currently have a normal coil fitted but have been told that a mirena coil may help with some of the pcos side effects.

However, I have just read that this can lead to weight gain. Is this any greater than with a normal coil?

I dont have a partner right now so am tempted to just get rid of it. Could you tell me your experiences/ advice please.

Thanks

  1. It was horrible. I went to get a coil fitted when I was married. Maybe because I haven't had children, but the doctor had some kind of student there watching while he was trying to put it in and it wouldn't go in, then he got this massive metal rod thing to make the cervix bigger so he could get it in, then I felt the biggest pain ever and he still couldn't put it in. Maybe I'm just not meant to get one fitted.

It's probably fine on most women.

  2. MY experience is yes it does lead to weight gain, when i had it removed over the following year i lost 3 stone in weight. i now have a normal coil, and find it much better.  I also found that with the mirena coil it completely stopped my period, and made me feel unwell.

  3. i had a contraceptive coil fitted, it made my periods very heavy and i could feel it.  I went to get it removed and found out I was pregnant!.  This was my experience and doesnt mean it will be the same for you.  I would definately have another talk with your doctor, good luck
