  1. I'm glad you understand there are so many of them.

Disney's Snow White and Fleischer's Gulliver's Travels -- they were roughly the same time and deliberately in competition with each other, and reveal a lot about the two studios' sensibilities.  I love them both.

Galaxy Express 999.  I should say something about Akira so I'll bring up Pinocchio to.  IMHO Akira and Pinocchio are two of the greatest films ever.  End of story.  I respect them.  Do I love them?  No.  I just think they are great.  They are my Honorable Mentions list.  Galaxy Express 999 I love.  Leiji Matsumoto is WAY cool.

Beauty and the Beast and Tin Toy.  The former used cgi in regular storytelling.  I'm not entirely happy with those sections of it.  It is better written than the Little Mermaid though, or the directors were more respectful of Howard Ashmun's work and that's why I love it.  Tin Toy was of course John Lessiter's ground-breaking CGI short film for Pixar which in the eighties was ab-so-lute-ly amazing.

Lotte Reiniger's The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) and The Triplets of Belleville (2003).  Two European films which owe very little to what America does.  And they are quite different.  You can probably buy or rent the Triplets of Belleville.  It's worth it.  The Adventures of Prince Achmed I see more often pirated on the Internet than I see for sale.  Ah well.  Like any of Lang's films, or Dreyer's Vampire or Murnau's Nosferatu it really shows what you can do with just a camera and an esthetic drive.  It is silhouette animation, like all those eastern shadow plays, and absolutely wonderful.  See it any way you can, early and often.

Mike Jittlov's The Wizard of Time and Space.  Like Prince Achmed and Tin Toy, an experimental film.  In this case one of the things he animates is himself.  Gosh it is so cool.

Finally the Nightmare Before Christmas and the climax of Flesh Gordon.  That last is not a misspelling.  Flesh Gordon was a soft-core p**n satire on Flash Gordon done four years before the DiLaurentis film you may be familiar with.  It had, as Baird Searles put it in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, something to offend everyone and that was definitely part of its charm.  In the climax, animated by Jim Danforth as an hommage to Harryhausen and Willis O'Brien, a large statue comes to life, and after exhibiting all kinds of effeminate behavior, grabs Flesh, not Dale Ardent, and heads up the top of a large tower to recapitulate the last few minutes of King Kong.  Some people would say that makes the Nightmare Before Christmas family fare by comparison.  I question that.  It is a dark film about human and superhuman selfishness, beautifully designed.  In other words typical Tim Burton.

Those are my favorites.  As I indicated, there are others I consider the best, though those are definitely on my list, but those are my favorites.
