  1. My favorite is to snuggle up to the cat on my couch with a glass of Scotch and a DVD, preferably one showing evil gangsters in Mexico or Brazil, sweating under a hot sun, the heating going full tilt, and Christmas decorations everywhere.

I know it isn't very competitive, but certainly relaxing, and the likelihood of having an accident and breaking a leg is minimal.

Mind you, there is one thing I enjoy doing outside: Dowsing the car windscreen with warm water to get the frost off is great fun! I look forward to it all night.

  2. My favourite would be hunting red deer, sika deer, tahr and chamois. Also pig hunting and fishing. For me, its the ability to put food on the table at a minimal cost. While most townies would disagree with this practice, I laugh at them for paying $4.54 for 8 beef flavoured sausages at the local supermarket when for that same amount of money I could fill two of my freezers at home with meat.

  3. Going out fishing and catching dinner then coming home all wet and cold, jumping into the hot tub and gazing out to the turbulent sea, nibbling our freshly caught fish while sipping on a great red.

  4. A tram journey through the heart of the country- the passing views, the cultural pitstops- you really discover the essence of the country, experience all the sights and sounds on offer

  5. Going to the Auckland Film Festival, especially if a movie is on at the Civic & you sit up the top so you can see the stars, etc.  I think our film fest is the best I've seen anywhere, even better than the Toronto Film Festival that  I checked out one time.  Also going out before or after the movie you've seen.  There is such a buzz in the city at that time & it's cool to see all the ethnic people come out to see movies from their countries & to see all us locals & the backpackers staying Downtown going to see their countries movies & overhearing them talking about it & being a bit homesick, etc.  It's a cool time!!

And sometimes people cry after documentaries & it's so sad & touching.  Like I saw one on alzheimers & people were crying afterwards as obviously they have a loved one with it, etc (like I did) & a woman who I assume was from Palestine out with her Kiwi partner who was just beside herself in tears at this really lovely movie about some American journalists that got Israeli & Palestinian kids to befriend each other, only to find they drifted apart after about age 14 as it was just too complicated.   After the movie she just stood there crying & her partner didn't know what to do.  I know it sounds like an awful time, but it's really touching & reminds you when you see strangers walking up the street they probably have so much going on in their lives & in their past.  It makes you think differently about people.  And it makes you realise just how multicultural our city is.

Also if it's not raining, a nice walk along Tamaki Drive or one of the surf beaches out West like Bethells Beach can be a good thing to knock the wind out of your sails every now & then, Mid Winter.  Although there's not alot of people doing it, well not out West anyway!  But that's half the attraction.

  6. As a physical lightweight it is my battles with a southerly gale, and the gusts of winds that halt me in my tracks or blow me onto my hand and knees.

  7. slipping on the frosted steps before leaving the house in the morning, fun because its free of charge and anyone else who catches it gets a laugh too.

  8. Tramping in the hills. I prefer it to the summer in many respects because you don't get bitten by bugs; snow covered trees, ferns etc are simply beautiful to look at; I can carry milk without worry about it going off; the long drops all smell better, everything just seems cleaner and fresher, especially on a clear day.

  9. Skiing although it takes a long time to get up to the ski fields as their so high up because we dont get snow to low levels only ocasssionly

  10. in the winter??.. skiing, snowboarding.. up the mountains cause its so beautiful and its soo much fun!

  11. Nothing! I swear, NZ is so boring and you can't go to the beach coz its freezing!

I like watching my brother play hockey on saturday mornings because i remember when i used to play on the freezing cold turf! hahah

  12. Activity? Hmm. I love curling up on the couch with a hot chocolate.

If you are referring to more outdoor activities - i love walking to school on freezing winter mornings. This is because the path i walk is COVERED in thick frost and my friends and i make mini snowballs out of it & throw them at eachother. It's MEGA fun. :)

I also have a good friend who is really into skiing.

  13. staying inside next to the heater. its fun cos i stay warm

  14. Staying in side & keeping warm!!! the winters are cruel in NZ...lol

  15. It will have to be the Shotover Jet and Skiing in Queenstown. I also love the Kayaking in Te Anau.  Once in a life time experience, especially in winter!

  16. Freestyle snowboarding has become quite popular in New Zealand and is enjoyed by many on Mount Ruapehu. It's great fun as well as the usual skiing. I looked forward to the winter simply because of the exciting activities on Mount Ruapehu!
