  1. My personal favourite is the assassin bug that infiltrates termite mounds.

It glues pieces of the termite mound to itself - making it appear to be part of the wall.  The termites themselves are blind, and can't see the bug, but when they feel the pieces of the mound, they assume that it's part of the normal mound, and don't call in the soldiers.

The assassin bug will then kill a worker, suck it dry, and then use the carcass as bait to draw in another worker - who will rush over to try to clean up the dead termite body, and the assassin bug gets the new worker.  They'll do this until they are full - sometimes killing dozens of workers this way.

It's not really a deception of a predator, but it's pretty cool.

  2. chameleon

  3. vampire octopus

  4. I am intrigued by nudibranchs (sea slugs).  National Geographic just did a great photo spread on these vividly colored creatures.  They are poisonous, so I guess it's not really "deception".

A good deception comes from non-poisonous animals colored like poisonous animals.  The Viceroy butterfly is the most often cited example of this.
