  1. My hangout in Paris is Aux Trois Mailletz at 56 rue Galand in the 5th arrondissement.

Its a classic and has been around for ages. I discovered it about 25 years ago and have been going back ever since. Almost every night I'm in Paris I wind up there (they are open until dawn).

There's a cabaret in the basement with a quite elaborate show that brings in talent from all over Europe and the States. The style is very "Paris in the 1950's". There's a constant stream of usually very well dressed patrons heading down there all evening.

But I spend most of my time on the ground floor where there's a piano and a rotating group of musicians and singers. The styles vary but its always good fun and everyone is very friendly. In the early evening you'll often hear classcial music and the manager, who is a big fan of opera, likes to hire young opera singers. There's shift change at 11 PM and the music tends to jazz and rock after that.

Both the people who work there and the crew of regulars who can be found there most nights are a pretty interesting lot.

Eric, once the bouncer and now an assistant manager resembles Lurch from the Adams family. despite his sinister apparrance he has a laugh that rocks the room and the manners of very classy gentleman. Tony Wu, the manager, came to Paris from Shanghai about 30 years ago and never left. He loves classical music and joins in belting out Arias with the young singers he hires. If you're a singer (as I am) he will instantly adopt you. There's an elderly gentleman, in his 80's, who I've never known as anything but "the professor", who always takes a turn singing classic French art songs (always pointing out that he is old and "mal a la gourge"). There's a bunch of Greek expatriates (some of whom seem to have come to Paris during the reign of the Colonel's Junta in Athens) always standing at the small bar and fliritng outrageously with any young woman who comes in (but in a very gentle and non-threatening way). There's another group of West Indian girls, all dancers or former dancers, who flirt just as outrageously with any young (or in my case, not so young) man.

In all you'll find it a very convivial place.

They serve food and while not a Michelin starred restaurant, its all pretty good and the prices are reasonable.
