I've tried sushi for the first time a couple of weeks ago, but didn't like it. I love seafood, but it's the seaweed that's turning me off. Is there any sushi out there without seaweed? Also, what are your recommendations to make sushi more enjoyable for me? Thank you to everyone who answers.

  1. All rolls (maki) have seaweed. California rolls and other specialty rolls have greater ratios of rice and veggies/sashimi to seaweed. They may be more up your alley. Try dipping the sushi in soy sauce mixed with wasabi (horseradish). It will neutralize some of the gamey/salty flavor of the seaweed.

Alternatively, get nigiri, a piece of fish atop sushi rice (no seaweed at all). I recommend salmon and eel for beginners. The eel is cooked and it is delicious.

  2. Many sushi places can use a thin slice of cucumber or blanched zucchini instead of nori (seaweed). These are referred to as "cucumber wrapped or zucchini wrapped" rolls.

These are pretty common, esp in CA. I have even had "sushi rolls" wrapped in a long wide thin strip of carrot instead of nori.

These come in a variety of fillings (veg and non seafood too), most sushi places are accommodating. Next time, simply ask for a cucumber wrapped roll with avocado, cream cheese, veggies...... it sounds healthy & delicious!

  3. i love a fresh sake roll (salmon)

but its not really a roll but nigiri (no seaweed)

    its yummmmmy

    also try tuna

  4. well, i like California rolls, but they still got the seaweed.

  5. there are a lot of sushi without seaweed. just ask the waitress/ waitor when you are in the restaurant.  some restaurants even have Soy paper, with an additional charge, for people who don't like seaweed.  there are options out there.

    my personal favourite sushi are:

    1) toro, fatty tuna belly.  - just a slice of fish on top of rice, no seaweed.

    2) Tako, Octopus - just fish and rice. no SWeed

    3) unagi, cooked barbeque eel with sauce - just fish and rice. no SWeed again.

    4) Ikura - roes - with rice and seawwed.

    5) Uni, sea urchin - with rice and seaweed

it is an acquired taste.  just experiment! find out what you like and what you don't like.
