Your average score is a 94? I'm registering mayors and state officials for an annual conference in October and they're not giving me their handicaps on their registration form. Instead, they like to give me their average score. So I'm not sure if the average score can be converted to your handicap :( Sorry I don't know anything about golf. Can someone help me with this? I need to have it turned in by today. I didn't want to feel stupid by asking a co-worker so I decided to make a jack *** of myself on here where people don't know me :) Thanks!

  1. average score of 94 would be about a 20 handicap for a par 72 course. it is your average score over par minus 2 or 3. there is a website that you could go to that will convert them for you

  2. It’s a difficult question to answer.

A 94 is 22 over par. After a number of assumptions, a person that averages a 94 is a decent golfer, the handicap should be around 16.

A person that averages 89 is approximately a 11 handicap.

You see handicap is based on the best 10 of last 20 rounds, factor in slop and course rating and you handicap should be much lower than average score.

  3. Their average score, plus how hard their home course is, and you could get close to their handicap.

A real handicap is based on the 10 BEST of the last 20 scores.  Also, a 94 on an easy course vs. a 94 on a top level course are completely different handicaps.

If limited to the average score, also ask for the course name and tees they play, and how many rounds this year.  Look up the course, the tees (distance or slope and rating), and then you may be closer to coming up with some kind of handicaps.

Not real GHIN handicaps.  Better than nothing.

Have fun with it.  Sell mulligans and party or charity with the money, give everyone a 3 foot string to use once per hole, play best shot, pair up good and terrible golfers, etc.

  4. It sounds like many of them do not keep official handicaps.  Given the annual furore that occurs in America when Golf Digest releases their annual rankings of the 200 best golfers (among politicians, lobbyists, etc.), it's little surprise.

You could search if they have a handicap on GHIN (just google this term); since many state golf associations are part of GHIN.  Failing that, subtract their score from 72 (par at most courses); and just explain at the start of the event that handicaps have been estimated based on the information submitted.

I travel quite a bit for work, and often end up in scramble tournaments (and the like) where this goes on; while I have an official handicap index, it's not uncommon for people to not have one.

In the end, as long as the weather is decent, the course is in good shape, and things move around fairly smoothly, it won't be a big deal.

    Good luck at your event

  5. Handicap is based on potential, not average.  So you could not convert an average into a handicap, but you could make a good guess.  You only play to your handicap once in every 4 to 5 rounds.  If your average is 94, your handicap would be in the neighborhood of 20.

  6. This tells you how to calcualte your handicap:

  7. The handicapp is the average number above par that the person shoots. I believe the par that handicaps are calculated with is 72, so a 94 score average would have a handicap of 22.

    Hope that helps

  8. You are going to be a very popular person at this event!  I have done a lot of business gatherings and the handicap topic is always popular.  Gives everyone something to talk about, and for the non winners, something to complain about, and for the winners, something they will get mercilessly ribbed about.  Good luck.  The key is to publish your methodology ahead of the event, after everyone has entered.  Quick and dirty method is Average score minus 72 (par for most courses) times 90%.  This way, the handicap is a function of the person's submission to you and squarely on them vs. having people coming to you about someone's handicap.  Then you can focus on the fun.  I always like to give out a prize to the biggest sandbagger - whoever shoots the biggest percentage below their handicap and a valiant effort prize to whoever shoots the highest percentage over their handicap.
