What is your insights about the study of special education?

  1. Special Education is a lot like studying anything else where the individual is the key component.  I worked as a counselor in the army for three years before I took my first formal psychology class and I had difficulty not rejecting theory's that were being taught because I knew they didn't work.  

    In the same way I started teaching special education on an emergency credential before I actually took classes.  The difference here is that these courses were all at the graduate level so the professors encouraged us to share our experiences and challenge the positions.  Actually I think with special education you would get much less out of the training if you don't have real live examples to work with.

    From the point of view of a teacher and a parent of students with special needs I must say that there is a lot more to study as we have barely scratched the surface.  The problem is relating the studies and the government regulations to be the most beneficial for our children mow and in the future.
