What is your interpretation of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee?

I have my own ideas on what this book is telling me, but I'm still unsure on whether I completely grasp what I have in mind.

I was wondering on what thoughts others might have.

Any ideas on the overall theme?

  1. I think it seems like a violent book. People should not be reading books on how to kill birds. They're intelligent and they should not be killed or eaten.

Who would read something like this? I mean, like, manuals for killing animals.

  2. It is telling us to not judge others, to accept people for who they are, to be proud of who we are, and that all human beings are worthy of being treated with dignity and respect.

There are numerous on line resources to help you with this novel, and with questions such as this one.  Many of them offer chapter summaries, list of characters, character sketches, discussions of themes, setting, imagery, and symbolism, etc.  Do a search for “study guides for To Kill a Mockingbird” etc., and you will find many sites.  Also, do a search here on yahoo answers for To Kill a Mockingbird and you will find a wealth of information.

  3. It's a story about growing up. Learning life's lessons, in sometimes not so nice ways.

  4. I loved this book! It is one of my favorite of all times.

One of the big things that i got out of this book was when i compared it to the history of the U.S. I know this sounds kinda weird at first but just hear me out.

Anyone that has studied history understands that if it's a bad time then something good is coming around the corner and if it's good then something bad is likely to happen next.

Well, this book showed that a lot. It's what most people's lives are like. Rollarcoasters. And people just go from one to the next. It's almost as if they want a new one so they can jump off the old one but once they get there they wish they hadn't.

I hope i'm making sense but my whole point is this: Life is a rollarcoaster and you need to slow down and even stop sometimes. Kinda get out of your own skin and look at the whole picture to see what really needs to be done and not what you want to think needs to be done.

    Hope i helped!

  5. The book is extremely complex.

It involves so many different themes. Some of the basic ones are:

    Right and Wrong

    Importance of Education

    Innocence

    Racial Injustice.

The ending is my favorite part.

I love how the book comes full circle, and it's not completely spelled out. Theres room for interpretation.

Check out the question i just asked about a comparison i discovered in TKAM:

  6. cary, have you even READ the book? I bet you haven't.

I honestly don't know what my interpretation is of the book, i don't really interpret books, I just read them usually and think "Oh that was a good book!" Maybe I'm too young to interpret the meanings of books, or maybe there isn't supposed to be an interpretation.
