  1. I don't think that the majority of the teachers genuinely care about the children. They don't spend the necessary time with the students.

  2. My opinion is not at all favorable.  Graduation rates are dismal.

  3. they are lagging behind parochial schools standards

The Board of Education  have had very dishonest individuals skimming funds intended for student supplies into their own individual wallet

  4. Probably one of the worst in the nation when you consider per pupil funding and an abysmal graduation rate that is below 30%..

  5. My aunt does nationwide education evaluation and consulting.  She just did a stint in Detroit.  When I asked her about it she classified it as "a lost cause".  That doesn't mean there aren't good schools in the Detroit metro area - but the school system as a whole is failing very badly.

And as far as funding goes:  I was told they get around $6000 - $8000 per student.  Higher than most schools.  So it either isn't a matter of funding or the corruption is very very bad.

  6. Detroit Public schools has a lot of good teachers, but a lot of poor funding and children who come from poor family environments are the combination that makes Detroit public schools do so poorly.

  7. They are a failure in every possible way.  They do nothing to prepare kids for college or any type of job.  Somehow they take in millions in funding which ends up in someones pocket.

  8. I live in the Detroit area and I think problems have really just originated from other problems. Detroit schools have been affected by a bad reputation, a weakening economy, and frequent mayoral scandals and corruption.

Usually all funds and efforts first go to the school system, but I don't think it is happening in Detroit.
