What is your opinion on environmental awareness?

I am researching on the subject of harmful and cancerous chemicals that are released into the atmosphere, that mess with the DNA structure (of both wild animals and humans) and nature's environmental equilibrium: Gases which are released during the manufacturing process of certain products used in the everyday life of us humans. I have already been pointed in the direction of the novel "Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson, and the REACH project... both are highly emotionally moving topics of discussion. I want to hear from the opinion of others on this subject please... how is money so important that these chemical manufacturers would continue to silently betray our mother nature in such a way?

  1. The topic I will like to say is walk on the road instead of using a vehicle for a very smaller distance either we can walk or we can use bicycle which is pollution free This can easily reduce the green house gas emmission and can reduce the Heat outside a lot why can this made has a rule in all the countries so that we can avoid pollution and at the same time it will be a good exercise for out body say upto 3km they have to walk.

  2. money is very important factor. i won't say that people are not aware but we do not care when it comes to us. as we know petrol is harmful but i won't say that everyone have to go in a bicycle but, still we can use it judicially by switching it off during traffic signals and also always keeping engine on for AC's etc should be avoided.

  3. They get paid to make the chemicals.  We all need to make money somehow.  My opinion is, look at the list of ingredients for some of the stuff YOU use (shampoo, tooth paste, gasoline) and lookup where those chemicals come from.  If you think you can do better, go right ahead.

  4. If you don't like the product, then don't buy it.  The market will dictate what people do and do not buy.  How much 'harmful' items did it take to make the computer you are now on?  or the cell phone and battery you use?  we each have our own little "i cant do withouts'  do you choose yours I will chose mine.

  5. Environmental awareness is fine, but what you do and do not do is more important than mere awareness.

Some (many?) people have the idea that if they pollute or damage the environment "just a little bit," that's fine.  They can't make a difference.  But how often is only one person doing the damage (slight thought it may be)?  Chances are, lots of people are doing the same thing.  This is an example of "Every little bit helps -- or, in this case, hurts.

You own actions may serve as an example to others, for good or bad.

In the early 1900s, our skies were full of carrier pigeons.  There were millions of them.  But hunters began shooting them for feathers and meat.  They literally killed almost every single one of them!  Now they're gone.

As the WWF advertisement used to say:  EXTINCTION IS FOREVER.  That's true of animals, but also applies to plants and all other living things.  Air and water can be so polluted that it may take decades to restore them.

The chemical manufacturers have huge investments in their plants, equipment and land.  They started polluting before it was known to be so damaging.  This is a case of "If you can do it, so can I."  Think about illegal drugs.  Many dealers value money over lives.  They have the attitude that they are a very small part of a very big problem and that if they don't satisfy the demand for drugs, someone else will.  So why let the other guys make all the money?
