This is just an opinion question....not a decision i am trying to make...but what are your views on welfare (food stamps...cash assistance....ect ect) On one side---you have people who are having a rough time (loss of job-family crisis ect ect)that it helps in troubled time....but on the other hand.....most of the people that i see/know spend their money on drugs and sell their food stamps for 1/2 the price and spend that money on drugs while their kids just fend for themselves basically. the same people never seem to have any intent on getting a job and think its neat they get free things from the government. Has anyone seen anyone doing good with their welfare or do most of you think that welfare is funding the drug industry? Do you think it is right that the government takes your hard earned money in the form of taxes to give to people who are not willing to work for their money in most cases? (the robinhood syndrome) now i am sure there are people that do good with their welfare and don't try to live on it....but i am just wondering your personal experiences/opinions.

  1. The problem is the expense of monitoring people on welfare.  I really don't think welfare is where *most* of the drug money comes from...there's plenty of strung out wealthy people they just have family and money to fall back on (or at least delay the inevitable).  In an ideal world we'd drug test people who applied for welfare and give them treatment, and give people who need a hand-up a hand-up to get through a tough situation.  Drug treatment is expensive.  Even if we just threw the addicts out on their butts there would be the responsibility of taking care of their kids which would also be more expensive.  Its not a very compassionate system...more like putting a band-aid on a stab wound to the chest...and mostly I think the governments do the minimum to make it look like they are providing citizens with some kind of security with their hard earned taxes.  We're going to pay for it more and more as a society as these kids start growing up.

  2. There is really nothing that you or I can do about it.  The government can try to enforce individuals to be more self-sufficient, but that is really all they can do.  Most young girls reluctantly have babies only to settle for a government check.  How can you blame them, because this is the norm in a society that lacks social and cultural values.  Here is a good example:  If you grew up in a family that attended all Ivy League schools, and is highly successful in society, how much pressure do you think you would have on you growing up as a youngster in that family.  The pressure for success would be enormous.   I would seriously doubt having a baby and picking up a government check would be the last thing on your mind.  Now, think of an individual on the opposite side of the spectrum.  Right, I am glad you understand.  This is a social and generational problem that we must comprehensively fight.

  3. It's like virginity. It is a good thing if it is not taken too far.

  4. hmm..well....

    if working people have to take a drug test

    before they get a job then people on welfare

    should have to too. im all about helping the other

    person, but i think the gov't should do checkups

    so that we know are money is being taken advantage of.

    i would pay EXTRA for the checkups rather than way more

    if being took advantage of.

  5. My answer is;

    Jesus never questioned those he helped.

    Most people have a sense of wanting to improve their lives. And while God may have created everybody equally. We all know that the Fact is, we are Not.

    Some are Smarter

    Some are creative

    Some are Leaders

    Some are Followers (most are actually)

    Some like Sports

    Some like cooking

    Some like helping Others

    Some are Greedy

    And yes some are Lazy

    And Every person on this planet Can become addicted to Something. It doesn't matter if it's Drug's, Alcohol, s*x, Money, Exercise, Religion, Work, Watching TV, Politics, Reading, education, Etc. . . .

    There will always be the few that abuse a system designed to help people get through bad time's.

    I give the example of the American Biker;

    20 years ago everyone on a Harley was a "Bad Person" just because of the Motorcycle they rode. When in Truth, it is only about 5% that were.

    Or

    1 in 20 were "Outlaws" aka "Anti-Society"

    I don't think Miss Lillyan Carter (Jimmy's Mom) who rode a Harley all over this country could be considered a,

    "h***s Angel"

    This country needs to provide for it's people;

    Health Care, and Education for as High as a person can go while still maintaining a passing grade.

    In return every American upon completion of High School will do a 3 year tour of Service for America. Weather it be Military, AmeriCorp, or PeaceCorp. with the later 2 going through a 8 week basic training type

    class for disipline and training.

    Hope my answer helps.

  6. I worked in a tutoring program and met many welfare families that were down on their luck but still trying to live a regular life, get their children educated, and climb out of the financial hole they were in.  Of course I also know about the many abuses of the welfare system.  Which is the greater evil - giving money to everyone who asks for it, knowing that many of them are welfare abusers, or not helping the many welfare recipients who need and deserve a helping hand?   Also, I wonder about how much of our taxes go to welfare anymore - I believe most of the social services have been cut substantially in the last 20 years.

  7. welfare is the victim's way around the system of haves and have nots.
