Question:

What is your opinion regarding my soon to be 3 month old son's eating/sleep "schedule"?

My little boy is going to be 3 months soon and he is eating (4) 7 oz bottles a day. He usually eats around 6:30 or 7:00 in the morning, then 11, 3 and then his last bottle is usually at 7;00 pm. In between he takes naps. At night he goes to bed around 8:00 pm and sleeps until morning. He whimpers here and there, especially around 3;00 am, but I don't go into his room. You can tell he is still tired. He doesn't actually cry loudly just kind of tosses and turns and goes back to bed.

He was 12 lbs at the last appointment which was like 2 weeks ago so does it seem like he is eating/sleeping enough?

  1. WOW, he seems great!!

I remember when my son would eat every 4 hours, I liked that much better than every 3!

And if he is sleeping through the night then that is great!

Consider yourself luckier than some lol

but yes 28oz is a fine amount. I think 28-32 is the range that is reccommended.

  2. it sounds fine to me!

  3. Hey, Max should be fine, my daughter was just the same and she is going for her first birthday the 11th of this month, There is no actual amount for baby to eat or drink or nap, as long as he is happy, you should be proud of max for being an easy child, I don't think you need to worry just make sure he is happy

  4. It sounds like a great sleep schedule to me (you lucky girl!!) but I would have to agree that he might be eating slightly too little over the course of 24 hours (based on the 2.5 oz for each pound of body weight as already mentioned).  It's not a huge deficit, as he's eating 28 oz instead of  30.

Since he's not waking fully at night I wouldn't recommend trying to wake and feed him then, so if want to try to increase his intake you might want to try adding one more ounce to each of his bottles during the day.  That would bring his intake up to 32 ounces, assuming he took it all at each feed.

Good luck!  Sounds like you have a great schedule going.

  5. he sounds perfectly fine and healthy! If he seems satisfied and is a happy baby then your doing great.

  6. If this is the schedule your baby has set for himself, and he isn't crying at night (a bit of muttering is fine), then it's the right schedule for HIM.

If it's an arbitrary schedule that YOU set -- you can't know that it's 'right' .. or that he's just adapted to it. (Most 3 monthers ARE still eating at night, so there would be nothing wrong with going in and offering a bottle if he is awake for more than a few moments.

His formula intake IS a bit on the low side based on his weight.  (An 'average' baby takes about  2 1/2 ounces per pound of body weight, so he 'should' need about 30 ounces rather than the 28 he's getting. Given that his weight gain (unless he was quite small at birth) is also a hair on the low end, you might try offering more milk.  If he doesn't want it he won't eat, but give him the chance.  Maybe try 5 6 ounce bottles, or offer 8 ounces instead of the 7 he's currently getting.
