On home schooling, I'm just wondering

I have been home school my hole life except for my 7th grade year

now (8th grade) I'm doing a program where I go somewhere once a week and do all my work at home

I find that home schooling compared to public school is much better and parents are so blind to what happens there

I just want to know what you think of it, do you think we are weird?

  1. Well, you spelled "whole" as "hole". That wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that there's a built in spell checker right in front of you. I noticed that, and I was educated in public schools.

    So...

    Home Schooling: 0

    Public Schools: 1

:D In all seriousness though, Home Schooling doesn't really provide the social aspect of development that all kids need to be successful and "normal". I hope you're getting it somewhere else.

  2. Spelling matters. It makes it easier for us to read what you are trying to say. I question the A's that you have gotten. It doesn't mean anything if you can't spell correctly or get your point across as you want to. There is only so much that you can control. I have almost no opinion on home schooling. You make some good points. I change my mind. I went to college and attended class. I got many benefits from attending class. I recently finished my masters on line. It was a great platform because I was able to connect with other students but there is a difference between connecting with someone on line and face to face. I don't see this as an all or nothing. I think home schooling is appropriate for some students and may be inappropriate for some others. It is a completely difference experience. It doesn't seem that every home schooled student is taught the same way. There are differences. I am not opposed to it but I am opposed to parents just using it as some kind of excuse to keep their kids out of school because of religious or anti-social reasons. The government is not controlling students. I never felt that way when I was becoming educated. I went to great public schools. They taught us how to think for ourselves by challenging us. I never would have gotten this education if I had been home schooled. For me, home schooling would have been a bad choice because of the fine public schools in our town.

I think as long as there is an objective oversight of home schooling then there shouldn't be a problem. If it's not working then the student should be sent to public school.

I met someone that was home schooled.

edit: The main benefits from home schooling that I see are flexibility and personalization. I'm sure that you do get a lot of socialization. It seems like a lot of work for your parents and/or tutor(s). It's costly. It also seems like there is more potential for slacking off.

  3. I know many home schooled kids, and the curriculum that the states have as the foundation of the teaching/learning process is just as socially incorporated as the public school system.  I wish I would have had the knowledge to home school my kids.  Home schooled kids are not isolated, they still have the city run sports programs, family and friends that they meet in places other than school.

Be proud that you are home schooled, and thank your parents for having the fortitude to home school you.

  4. I think homeschooling is very appropriate in many cases! On the other hand, I feel you miss out on learning how to relate to others in different situations/environments.There is alot of bad things that happen in public schools, but there are also alot of GOOD things also!Plus, when you get out in the world, it won't be anywhere near as sheltered as at home!:)

  5. Home schooled your HOLE life?

    Oopps.

anyway putting your bad spelling aside, Home-schooled children tend to fair better in later life, are not influenced by the dreaded peer-pressure & escape the worst bit of a schooled education.

    Bullies.

Nothing wrong with home-schooling & no I don't think your are weird.

  6. Different strokes for different folks. No, I don't feel you're weird because your home schooled. But it does pass a heavy burden to your parents to insure you get a good, balanced education, including sports, etc. Your parents may not be trained to handle all the required curriculum, but then "trained" teaches vary in their skills too. Wishing you the best of luck.

  7. I disagree with the idea of home-schooling.  It would be useful as a compliment to the public school curriculum.  The problem is that it may lead to isolation, narrow-mindedness and even prejudice.

  8. I don't think you're weird, but I do think that the majority of home school kids are insulated from things going on that they should be aware of. Most home schools have religious undertones which is okay if one does as the bible commands and separates their life from the "way of the world." Most don't allow God to have that one cause it isn't in Exodus. However, when an evangelist sermonizes and tells his flock which way they should cast their vote then I don't feel that your insulated education gives you much right to discourse on worldly topics. Your pastor should stick to God and your quest for your version of Heaven. I home schooled my daughter in the ninth grade because of emotional issues and I had a heck of a time finding secular home school material that was state approved curriculum.

  9. I think homeschooling is great!  I homeschool my children, and I know that it is the best option for our family.

They get a customized education rather than having to fit into the cookie cutter mold that the public schools offer.  They get to socialize in the real world, rather than just learn about it. Those two reasons alone make it worth it, but there are many other benefits to homeschooling.

The only con is dealing with people that have absolutely no idea what homeschooling actually is, and perpetuate the myths such as a lack of socialization, the inability for a homeschooler to learn higher level material, etc.

    Wish you the best!
