What is your process to get a avocado seed to root?

hey I have a avocado seed I would love to plant and take care of over time, I know it is a long proccess and would like to get it right the first time.

I've heard of setting the seed half way immersed into water and wait until you see it root,then planting it in soil.

has this proccess worked for you?

what kind of soil should I use?

You stick 3 toothpicks into the side, about an inch above its flat bottom. Place the toothpicks on the rim of a cup of water so the bottom of the pit touches the water.  After a few weeks, a shoot will grow out of the top and roots will grow in the water. When the roots grow as big as your fist, put potting soil in a 1 gallon container and plant the pit. Its a very pretty plant.

I have a 5' tall avocado tree from seed take 4 toothpicks and stab the seed so it makes a cross put it in a glass of water point up and wait when the root starts to coil around  on the bottom plant the seed in potting soil give it alot of sunlight and plenty of water an in 2 years you to can have a 5' tall avocado have fun and good luck

I have the best success starting them right in soil.

After you have enjoyed the avocado take the pit and plant it in a 6 or 8 inch pot. Plant it flat side down, rounded side up (if the pit is upside down, it will not sprout). The top of the pit should be just below the soil line. Give it a good watering and don’t water again until the surface soil starts to dry. Keep an eye on it – the soil should never dry out. Soon you will have a baby avocado tree.

The reason I prefer starting them in soil, is that water roots are not only brittle but different roots than would be produced in soil. When a water started pit is planted in soil, it has to develop new ‘soil’ roots anyway. So I figure why not have it start off that way from the beginning. It may take a bit longer for you to see a shoot because the pit will send down a root first, and then a shoot will appear. But it WILL appear.
