Question:

What is your purpose?

Why do you come to YA...and more specifically to GWS?

Are you interested in sharing knowledge and learning from others? Or do you see it as a social group, and use it to make friends and/or acquaintances and/or enemies?

If your answer is the latter...do you think that it falls in line with the original purpose of the forum, and how do you think those of the former category feel about your clique?

  1. What sucked me in was the sheer amount of people / posts there were to disagree with - and I wanted to stick up for feminism, and try to spread the word.

That's still true, but I do find myself preferring some people over others and it's hard not to feel there are certain cliques where you're more or less agreed with.  I try to take people and facts as I find them - good debates are interesting whoever they come from :-)

  2. Hahahahahaha...I LOVE that someone else works for the government. I'm working for the Canadian government so I'm "extra slack" during the day.

I come here because I've taken a lot of different courses on all of the social sciences, and WMST is one of the ones I'm most fascinated with. I love to see the different arguements people have, and I'm a bit of a master-debater (haha).

I'm not here to make friends but if I like what someone's said in response to a question, I usually shoot them an email if their profile allows it.

The extremists amuse me, and I'm intrigued with so many of the different beliefs I can find in this section. It makes my day seem like 5 minutes instead of 8 and a half excrutiating hours.

  3. To alleviate boredom...

  4. I do it for all of the above. As for how they feel about me....They hate me, they all hate me!  LOL

  5. To combat feminism.

  6. I come specifically to GWS because many of the questions are thought provoking and are asking for opinions. I have many ideas and more opinions, so I am never at a loss to share.

Yes, of course, I am interested in learning from both men and women who have some life experience and who know their own minds. In addition, with few exceptions, many of my friendships were forged by virtue of the exchange on this particular site.

Whether or not the camaraderie was anticipated, there was certainly the potential allowed for because of the 360 page and the email capability.

GWS is just a place for men and women to talk about anything at all that affects them, positively or negatively.

I am not completely sure of how to answer your last question.

How do those in GWS feel about GWS? I can't answer that for most of the others but only for those with whom I've become familiar. And why, I wonder would people seek to make enemies? I know that has happened here, but such has never been my aspiration.

    C. :)

  7. initially i was fascinated with the questions and answers of gws.  there are some very bright people who post here and they brought things up that i had never thought about.  everything was shiny and new.  novel.

these days it could use a little tarn-x.  the questions are for the most part recycled and rehashed.  still, some answers make the repetition worthwhile.

i don't feel that i'm part of a clique, and i'm not bothered by those who seem to be, unless they are here for the express purpose of manipulating the board and tag-teaming other members.  that just sucks.

though it wasn't my intention to, i'd say that i have made a few friends.  and to those who regard me as the enemy, bear in mind i don't hold grudges nor do i take this board very seriously.

  8. I come here to learn contemporary English.  I am not good in english and I could only use the word "indeed" in chat rooms.  ("Indeed" made sense every time, any time, all time, always)

But now there are not many chatrooms and there is no fun saying indeed to everybody.  So I write answers and read questions and answers here in Yahoo Answers.

  9. I do what I want! Muahaha.

No seriously, I just like to talk....I email people occasionally, make fun of people occasionally, get emails from people who don't understand my smartass-ness, share my wisdom about all things female, gain wisdom from interesting people, yadda yadda.

  10. When I first came here, I was hoping that listening to other people's views would help to clarify my own, and I was glad I'd found a place where I could add my traditionalist opinions to the gender debate. I've been interested in gender issues since studying feminist literature, and I enjoy the open discussion we have here. I didn't expect people to form groups or friendships on a Q&A site like they do on regular forums, but I stay here now to chat to the people I've met as well as for the debate. I don't think I've made any enemies (at least I hope not!) but naturally there are people you get on well with, and those you don't. So, I'd say it's a mixture of the social and the interlectual side.

    Y!A is addictive!

  11. Well... Actually I do research about political participation of women, and I think is one of my favorites issues to discuss...

  12. I didn't come here to socialize, but that's how it turned out in any case. I'm mostly here to exchange opinions.

  13. Its like getting front row tickets to a freak show... for FREE!

  14. Boredom. This forum is very funny.

  15. I come here because I work for the government.  'Nuff said really, lol.

(That's right folks, your tax dollars are right here, hard at work.)

    Edit@ Sonya: I'm Canadian too, but I'm a provincial government employee.  :)

  16. My purpose is purely to live a short duration, so long as feminists indulge this, and then to die shortly thereafter.

  17. To send misogynistic little trolls into hysterical fits of the vapors.

    I'm very good at it.

  18. To GWS?

To oppose ideology and after last nights showing of unutterable ignorance, that to.

  19. I started to come here out of interest in the subjects being discussed and continued coming her out of habit, and i am a creature of habit

  20. I come here because I am addicted to it. I need to clean my house, but cannot pry my hands off the computer keys. I need to go to Y!A rehab.

  21. im interested in the topic. i took a womens gender module during my last year at university and really enjoyed it. but, im mostly here to pass the time and ask questions completely irrelevant to gws.
