I've never gotten a rating over the board, but I've played correspondence chess at www.redhotpawn.com (also goes under several other names such as www.chessatwork.com) for about a year under the name HolyT.  My rating is 1520.

My rating that the website redhotpawn.com has given me after numerous games is 1351.  Shockingly bad huh?

most of my losses are due to:

A.) playing someone with a rating at least 250 points higher than mine

B.) wanting to leave because the other guy left and ending up forfeiting the game

C.) a dumbass mistake

Everyone in the world starts with 1000 "ELO" points.This is named after Dr. Arpand Elo who established the system back in 1969.

The formula is:

Elo change = +/-16 +((Your Opponents ELO-Your ELO)*4/100).

If the difference between 2 players is > 350,then 350 is used.

In a draw +/- 16 is removed of course.

This very system is used in most countries and in Yahoo Chess.

That is if you beat Kasparov you win 30 points,if you draw you win 14 pts and if you lose you lose 2 pts.

IM (International Master) "" > 2300 ELO

NM (National Master)  ""     > 2200 ELO

CM (Candidate Master) ""  > 2100 ELO
