  1. -A deep clean bath about once every two months [any more than that removes the coats natural oils and should only be done if you are showing]

-Grooming as much as possible, especially curry comb which stimulates the coat

-Keep blanketed in the winter and fly sheeted in the summer

-Of course a healthy and balanced feed plan. Grain, Hay and Pasture.

  2. To keep skin, coat, mane and tail in good condition, brush and curry him every day.  Bath him  with a mild soap/shampoo when needed.  Don't forget to clean his hoofs out with the hoof pic.  He should feel like a champ and you will too!

  3. Oil is good for enhancing shine, but I find that nature works best in keeping their coats and skin in great condition. Mine is out 24/7 so doesn't get brushed all the time and so retains many natural oils to his coat.

  4. For showing we wash every week with shampoo and rinse well.

Deep grooming is also essential, rubbing right into the base of the coat. Pay attention to eyes, muzzle, dock etc as well.

Also clean your horse and dry well after hard workouts. We also cover, including summer time with very light covers.

  5. Like good quality healthy hooves a good healthy coat must start from the inside out. Make sure all your horses nutritional requirements are being met first. Always be vigilant against intestinal parasites as they will literally suck the health right out of your horse. Good quality grooming is important but a healthy horse will seem to glow from the inside out.

I try to avoid bathing with soap as much as possible unless the horse is showing skin problems. If that is the case treat them accordingly. When bathing with soap make sure it is properly pH balanced and designed for horses. Grooming stimulates the hair follicles and can help distribute the natural oils.

Adding a good quality grooming spray like Laser Sheen will help immensely. It bonds to the hairs, provides UV protection and protects from dirt and mud when horses roll. All horses love a good roll but mud ect can really draw the moisture out the coat.

Keep covered in fly repellent in the Summer months as fly bites irritate the skin and scratching damages both the skin and hair -- not to mention being really disturbing and stressful to the horse.

Adding oils or fat (like corn oil or wheatgerm oil) to a horses diet can give it a better "glow" faster  but if it's needed it's usually a sign that somewhere the full nutritional needs aren't being met. Very rare that just one nutrient is being left out so in those cases I usually look at the full picture of the complete diet the horse is on and see where it could be lacking or imbalanced.

  6. Mine...? Its a good thorough groom twice a day. The lot!

  7. Corn oil! It keeps weight on horses, and their coats stay shiney. :)

And, always use a UV protecting flysheet to keep them from getting bleached :)

  8. It's simple feed a well balanced good quality feed add some linseed oil when horses are coating (winter/summer), don't wash your horse too often (removes the natural oils from the skin and coat) and groom regularly.

  9. put rugs on at night and a summer rug when the horse is grazing but take it off for 4 hrs a day.

  10. Grooming...

  11. i wash my horse weekly and make sure she gets the right nurturance and minerals, should keep ur horses coat shiney and looking freash! and a shiney coat also makes the horse look well looked after! and remember to brush ur horse before and after rides even when u dont ride that day give the horse a brush down.

    hope that helps! :-)

  12. grooming everyday, corn oil and vegetable oil

    :)

  13. The true secret is feeding!!!! The big world Champions feed their horses very well!! So the shine & gloss comes from the inside out. High feeds, with oils. Flaxseed oil, corn oil(NOT veggie, not the same!!!!!). Brush with only hair brisle brushs, not the plastic ones.

  14. grooming before and after u ride., then after u ride rub baby oil on them like once or twice a week, makes there fur soft.,'

    works on dogs 2, =)

  15. I follow my equine naturopaths feeding schedule & make sure my horses get the right amount of herbs, I particularly like roships & mix 20tbs of rosehip granules into a 20L drum & wet their feed down with 1L per feed 2x per day, along with sunflower seeds, linseed oil among other things.  I've even converted my trainer who's now feeding it to her horses cos she can't believe how amazing my horses coats are! I also use a natural shampoo, it's an aloe vera shampoo which makes their coat, mane & tail softer than my own hair! They're out in the paddocks 24/7 so have plenty of air & sunshine to keep them natural & healthy. Happy grooming :)

  16. i uses flax-oil o my horses it works a treat, its good for the coat, skin and joints. Its defiantly worth a try
