Lets pretend you have a show on Monday, your first class is at 10:10am. It is now Sunday 9am. It takes 10 minutes traveling. to get there.

Your horse is black, but needs a bath.

  1. well, i would ride first, working on last minute things and practicing some classes (for ex.  if your doing flat classes on the rail do walk/tot/canter reverse walk/trot/canter reverse on the rail.

Then i would hose your horse off and turn him out.

Clean his stall, clean your tack, and put everything you'll need into the car/trailer (grooming kit, tack, saddle pads, hoof stuff, fly spray, show sheen, helmet, boots, pants, coat, gloves, whip/spurs extras of everything

(i go through and think head to toe what i need on myself and my horse for the show)

Then, pull out your shipping boots if you use them

Then, get your horse from turnout and give him a bath, washing EVERYTHING except his mane (do his tail, though)  Put him on cross ties/tie him somewhere and let him dry in then sun whilst you braid/band his mane. (but avoid a dusty area) and clip him, legs, and face are most important.

Once hes dry, groom him, put on hoof stuff, fly spray and show sheen/miracle groom (AVOID THE SADDLE AREA WITH ALL OF THESE!)

Put on a sleazy hood if your using one, a light blanket if its cool enough to allow one and leave him in his stall.

Next day come in, put on boots, load him into the trailer and go to the show.. get there at like, 8 or 9 so you can walk around and you won't be stressed for time.. and you'll also get better parking

    Good Luck!

  2. well.... my tack would be cleaned down well by 9am the day before because you have to wash your show blankets and i like to air dry them, so saturday night the clothes, blankets anything show realated that needed washed in the washer would be wasked and hanged to air dry over night.

sunday after noon the horses would get washed and groomed down well.  the trailers would be loaded (with tack and any other equpiment that is needed) sunday night. last before we left the barn we'd pick out the stalls extra good.

monday morning we'd get up at 5 am. touch up the grooming (we did have a white horse). braid all the horse's tails and manes, put on some hoof polish, let it dry and be off to the show by 6.30 am. .

get there and set up base camp (yeah it was a base camp like setting). unload the horses, make sure they were clean and do any touch ups with their coats, manes and tails. give em hay then go get regestered for classes.  get mah lucky number (108) and get half way dressed in the tack room.

then at 8.30 tack up the horses slowly, go to the pratice ring and do a light warm up.  have my trainer watch me and then go back to base camp to finish getting dressed.

by 10 i'd done being dressed, making sure all my hair was up and outta sight, the gloves were on, the tall boots were on and wipped down. the show sheen would be on and any finishing touches would be done.

    then it'd be show time.

  3. I could not be ready for a show in 24 hours.

I have Paints.  They need their white faces and white socks "booted" almost a week before the show.  I would have all my tack, show clothes, boots etc packed the day before the show.  I would have my horse trailer and truck packed, fueled and ready to go.  The amount of things I take to a weekend show is amazing and I could NOT do it in a rush - I have a list on my computer so I print it off and then pack from that.  It includes everything from feed, wheelbarrel, buckets, wash supplies, lunge supplies, etc.

The day before the show I clip bridle paths and faces.  I bath my horse, taking special attention to their white.  I band their manes.  I apply a slinky and blanket to keep them clean and the bands lying flat.

I always excercise my horse well the day before a show, but not in the ring, if possible.  I will try to take them for a good, long trail ride so they aren't frisky but also not sore or sour.

I MUST arrive at the show early enough to lunge and then ride my horse in the ring, especially if its a noisy indoor ring.  You also need time to get your numbers and stuff at the show ring.  I do not apply hoof black, put in my horse's tail extension, dress myself in show clothes, etc until the morning of the show, and that takes time.  It would not matter to me if my class was at  10:00, I would want to be at the show at least 2 hours before it started so I could warm-up there, and not be in a wild rush or panic before my first class.  Guessing that the show starts at 8:00, so I would need to be there, unloaded by 6:00.  I would ride first, see the show office next, and then unpack my equipment and set up my trailer as a change room/tack room.  My horse would be eating tied to the trailer all day long.

The amount of prep and clean-up after a show is amazing, and it makes me tired just thinking about it.  For a weekend breed show I probablyhave 10 hours of prep before I leave, including clipping, bathing, packing.  Clean-up is several hours as I would need to wash clothes, horse blankets, clean the trailer and truck, unband, etc.

The smaller the show, the less work.  But not much, I care about how my horse and I look!

  4. Way before this I make sure my clothes are all set and put aside, and that my tack is cleaned, also that I had the grooming supplies ect. Also, (If you're trailering the horse) make sure that the car/trailer is all set and the tack is set for the show. And I wash my horse about every day for one week before the horse show but if its black, then I wouldn't have to worry much. Then get dressed like 10 minutes earlier than when you go on.

    Thats It.

  5. Well my show routine is usually, I go out and clip the day before we get ready for the horse show. Then I usually have a lesson before the horse show, then I bath and then call my mom to come and braid my horse. While shes braiding I go and clean my locker and get everything I need and put it in the van (if we have to travel witch is usually most of the time) then clean my saddle. Usually by then my mom is done and I inspect braids (I'm very picky:D) Then give him hay and make sure he has water then leave. Then at home I get all of my clothes together for the morning. In the morning I go downstairs and throw a bagel in the toaster. Get dressed and brush teeth and hair and whatnot then eat my bagel. Then we go to the barn and while he eats his breakfast I brush and put him blanket on him. Then I bring him out to the cross ties and I put his bell boots and shipping boots on while my mom does his forelock. Once I'm done I load him into the trailer and we head out to the show.

  6. SUNDAY-

First, at home, I would get all my show clothes together in my garment bag.

Once at the stables, I would clip my horse ( you don't want to clip a wet horse, and after you clip ears, you need to wipe them out in the bath, so they are clean). I would then bathe my horse, paying any extra attention to any white areas. I would then braid / band my horse. Then throw on a slinky, dress sheet, and fly boots on any white legs. Be sure to also braid and bag the tail. (Which should have been washed and combed out in the bath.) I usually also spray a coat conditioner on my horse before I put a sheet on him.

I then clean all my tack. Polish the sides of the bit and the stirrups for extra shine in the show ring.

I then load everything in the trailer:

    -Tack

    -Clothes / Boots

    -Grooming Kit

    -Lunge whip / lunge line

    -spare halter / bridle

    -first aid kit

    -hay

I put shipping boots or wraps in a bag outside my horse's stall so I can wrap him in the morning.

Once at home, I pack a cooler of food and water.

    MONDAY MORNING-

    -Add ice to the cooler.

Plan to get to the show grounds about 8.

-Get to the stables, wrap horse and load.

Get to the grounds, register for classes. Un-dress horse, unbraid tail, brush any shavings off, spray another sheen on coat conditioner. Lunge in open arena so he can get used to the place.

At 9, tack my horse. Get myself dressed.

9:30, get on and warm up. Make sure my horse is listening. Practice any patterns.

10:00, be at entrance gate. Ready to go.

    Good luck!

  7. i would wash all my tack, and make sure all my show clothes are clean, then pack up the trailer, wash my horse, if he needs to be braided braid him, put a slinky or something over his braids and keep him in the stall overnight so he doesnt get dirty .. thats pretty much all i do and other little thigs along the way but those are the major thigs to do

  8. SUNDAY

First I clean all my tack that I am taking,

Then I make sure my outfit is clean and hang it in the truck

Polish my boots and put in the truck

Load my tack into the trailer

Work my horse lightly, make sure he is ready for the classes and no lameness issues

Brush him and Clip his bridle path, whiskers and ears.  Legs if they need it.

Give him a bath with a black coat enhancing shampoo.

    Band/Braid his mane.

Put baby powder on any white areas to enhance.

Braid his tail and leave it for the night.

Let him dry and put a slinky on his neck to hold down the bands, throw a blanket on him to keep him clean

Put hay in a hollder in his stall, feed and fresh water

Put him in for the night

    MONDAY

Brush off any dirt from the legs, more baby powder, throw my grooming kit in the trailer with some spot removal and bounce dryersheets

    Load the horse up

Get to the show by 830 to take him in, show him the arena, maybe lunge if he is frisky

Take off his blankets/slinky at 930.  Quick groom over, make sure everything looks good, saddle him up and have him ready to go in.

Throw on my show clothes,  wipe any dust from my shoe

  9. well i would wash my horse and if you braid him i would braid him now and then put a neck cover or something over them so they don't get all messed up and keep him in a stall for the night so he won't get really dirty.  but before you wash him get s short ride in so that way he won't have a lot of built up energy.ok now you can clean your tack and wash your saddle pads so they are will stay clean for the show. then make shore your trailer is ready to do with all your stuff in it then you can go and wash all your clothes that you are going to use for the show.
