  1. Tells you how much tax you will pay over the coming year. I'll not bore you with the detail but it is a multiple of the number. There will be an explanatory document for your reference with your tax code advice.

  2. I assume you mean your Unique Tax Reference or UTR.  It has nothing to do with your tax code.  It is a reference number issued by HMRC when you complete a self-assessment tax return or are requested to complete one.  It uniquely identifies a taxpayer.  You need it to register for self-assessment online.

  3. Your tax code tells you how much you can earn before you start paying tax. you just add a 0 to the end of it.

    For instance,

T/code 516 means you can earn £5160 per annum tax free.

    T/ code 476 "          "     "     "     £4760 "       "        "     "

  4. You haven't said if you are employed or self-employed. Basically the reference number enables tax office staff to trace your record to answer any queries you may have.

If you are employed, you use your National Insurance Number as a reference. You will also come under your employer's reference, but on it's own, that wouldn't be enough for tax office staff to call your record up. A tax code number is of no help whatsoever in this regard.

Employed people have a 10 digit unique tax reference number. You will find that on your Tax Return or statements. Your National Insurance Number MAY be linked to your record, but no guarantees.

  5. if you need to speak to the tax office then you have a reference number to give them so they can find your details.
